Cagers Face Wolfpack Saturday
By Steve Giannini
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer
Last time the Cavaliers faced N. Coach Gibson's Crew Seeks Fifth Conference Win Versus N.C. State
C. State, Virginia lost. The game
was played in Greenville and the
Cavaliers lost John Gidding in the
game due to a knee injury while
Chip Case was still out with his
injury. Both Gidding and Case are
ready to go in the contest with the
Wolfpack this Saturday night at
Cavalier Forward Mike Wilkes Launches Foul Shot At Hoop
hoping they can tip the balance.
The Wolfpack's fortunes in the
ACC have been coming up since
two weeks ago when they beat
Duke after coming from 15 points
behind. N. C. State's slender center,
Vann Williford, was responsible for
the comeback tallying 29 points.
His average is third best in the ACC
at 22.9 points a game.
However, this past weekend at
Clemson even Williford's 26 points
could not pull out a victory over
the hot shooting Tigers and Butch
Zatezalo's outstanding 34 marks.
Wednesday night at Maryland, State
evened their ACC record at 4-4-the
same as Virginia's ACC mark.
Williford is not the only scorer
the Wolfpack has. Forward Joe
Serdich is presently scoring at a
13.8 clip and has the ability to hit
from the corner which has helped
to take some pressure off of
Williford's inside tactics. At
Clemson Serdich managed 24
points, his season high.
The other forward, 6-6 junior
Richard Anheuser, has been giving a
lot of help on both the offensive
and defensive boards. His scoring
average is 9.1 and his rebounding,
5.6, behind Williford's average of
11.
The two guards, Dick Braucher
and Nelson Isley, have been steady
performers while occasionally
hitting double figures.
Somewhat of a surprise has
come from State's A1 Heartley. Just
a sophomore, Heartley has played
the guard position in every game
and has been outstanding in the
press and grabbing loose balls.
Depth is all important to the
Wolfpack. Players that have come
off the bench frequently to
perform well are Bill Mavaredes,
Dan Wells, Doug Tilley, Jim
Rinsinger, and Joe Dunning.
Six weeks after his knee
operation, Chip Case has re-entered
the Virginia starting lineup.
Although at times against UNC his
knees appeared shaky, he hit for
14 points and handled the ball
adeptly.
Mike Wilkes continued to lead
the Cavaliers in offense. His 18
points against the Tar Heels helped
to hold his average at 16.5. Gidding
follows next in the scoring column
with a 15.3 average.
Into The Stretch
With the ACC season going into
the stretch, Virginia has some
formidable competition to face.
After N. C. State, the next
conference game is against Duke in
Durham. Wake Forest and South
Carolina remain, too. Right now
Virginia, N. C. State, and Duke
possess .500 records. Wake is
holding down third place behind
UNC and South Carolina. With all
of the Cavaliers' personnel in operating
order, if not quite healthy,
there ought to be a real scramble
for the seedings in the early March
ACC Tournament.
