North Carolina Stays On Top

By Dave Marshall

Bill Chamberlain led North
Carolina's once beaten Tar Babies
to a 102-58 rout of the
Cavayearlings in the preliminary to
the varsity's loss last night.

Described as an "unselfish
player" by Coach Bill Guthrie, the
6′6″ Chamberlain hit from all over
the court to lead every scorer with
28 points. He also led Carolina's
rebounders with seven and had
seven assists to lead both teams.
Though Chamberlain has only "a
fair chance to crack next year's
starting lineup" it looks as if Dean
Smith has found another Charlie
Scott.

Though not completely out of
the game until the final fifteen
minutes the Cavayearlings could
not cope with the Tar Babies'
finesse and shooting. Besides
Chamberlain, the Carolina attack
featured Dennis Wuycik and Steve
Previs who scored 15 and 16 points,
respectively, and teamed to lead a
demoralizing fast break early in the
first half.

The Tar Babies, who some say
are the nation's finest freshman
team, made 24 of 33 field goal
attempts in the second half while
outscoring the First-Year Men
54-24. In the first half the Tar
Babies put the game away about
five minutes into the first half when
Chamberlain, Previs and Wuycik
combined to build a 6-5 lead into a
25-11 bulge with a flurry of baskets
in a little over six minutes. Then
the Cavayearlings regained their
composure and the scoring evened
out. At the halftime buzzer the Tar
Babies enjoyed a safe 48-34 lead.

Chip Miller led the losers with
fifteen points while hitting seven of
eight free throws and Tim Rash
garnered ten points. Scott
McCandlish led all rebounders with
eight. As a team the Cavayearlings
hit on 20 of 54 field goal attempts,
understandably their worst output
of the year, for 32 percent. The
shorter First-Year Men were also
out-rebounded 30-27. The Tar
Babies connected on 43 of 72 field
goal attempts for 59.7 percent.

Coach Guthrie claimed his
charges played "their best game all
year" and attributed the win to a
combination of the Tar Babies' "on
day" and the Cavayearlings' "off
day". Coach Dick DiBiaso
complimented the Carolinians on
"an excellent defense".

North Carolina's freshman's
record is now 9-1, their only loss
coming from Gardner Webb which
is a junior college. The
Cavayearlings' record is now 8-2.
