Grapplers Host Holiday Tournament

Rutgers, ODC, W-M

By Tom Sansonetti
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

"Saturday afternoon is going to
be the toughest for everybody,"
said George Edwards. "People are
going to be real tired."

Virginia's wrestling mentor was
referring to this weekend's four
team round-robin tournament to be
held in University Hall. Each squad
will have the opportunity to play
the other three teams by the time
the holiday tourney ends late Saturday
afternoon.

The first two rounds are scheduled
at two and eight o'clock on
Friday with the final round set for
1:30 p.m. Saturday. Besides our
guys the Rutgers, Old Dominion,
and William & Mary grapplers will
be delaying their vacation breaks.

The winner will be the team
that accumulates the largest number
of points at the end of the
round-robin. According to Coach
Edwards, William & Mary and Old
Dominion should be favored to
take the crown. Rutgers is a weak
sister in a tough league, and thus,
the New Jersey boys will have to be
considered a dark-horse.

The Indians and Monarchs
dominated the tourney a year ago,
and both schools have the identical
line-ups returning. As far as comparative
scores are concerned, W&M
has a slight edge.

However, Virginia with a 2-1
record thus far is not to be taken
lightly. Coach Edwards' charges are
in good shape physically, and probably
will be able to substitute at a
number of weight classes. This will
prevent the same man from having
to wrestle twice in Friday's double
session.

The flu had hit but one boy,
Jack Johndrow (115 pounder), as
of yesterday afternoon, and Mr.
Edwards is keeping his fingers
crossed. Virginia got another lucky

break, as far as Johndrow's illness is
concerned, in that there will be no
115 pound competition this weekend.

The Cavalier grapplers will have a
long rest after this tournament, as
they won't wrestle again until February
7 against Maryland. Virginia
will have but home match remaining
against VMI February 12.
