Grapplers Seek Second Win Against Gettysburg College

Smarting from their recent loss
to N.C. State, the Virginia wrestlers
will attempt to get back on the
road to a winning season Saturday
night when the Cavaliers host
Gettysburg College in University
Hall.

The varsity squad, under the
coaching of first-year wizard,
George Edwards, is looking for its
second victory in three starts. An
unexpected romp over Duke and a
close loss to a powerful N.C. State
team have been the results of some
excellent first-year wrestling and
strength in the middleweights,
where Captain Tom Moore(1-1) and
sophomore John Pegues(2-0) have
provided the necessary leadership.
Warren Clark, a third-yearman, has
come up with some upsets and a
surprising 2-0 record, while
newcomer John Pitas has proved
himself to be a clutch performer
and an outstanding prospect for
future years at 130 lbs.

Against Gettysburg the lineup
will remain basically the same;
however, several first-yearmen are
challenging for starting positions.
At 145 lbs. Lyles Carr, with a 1-0
J.V. record, could replace Dixon
Brown, who pinned against Duke
but was felled himself in the State
match. Other changes in the lineup
are Ron Bright or Norm Spain,
another first-yearman, in place of
physically ailing Pete Faber at 160
lbs. and Mac Horton, who scored a
pin last week on the J.V., in the
heavyweight bracket.

As far as Saturday night's
competition goes, Gettysburg
sports a 1-1 record, including a win
over Mulenberg and a loss by a
narrow margin to a powerful
Hofstra University team. Drawing
wrestlers from the Pennsylvania
area, Gettysburg is known to be a
small-college power. Perhaps their
strongest wrestler is a 152-pounder,
who will wrestle Tom Moore in a
rematch of his narrow victory over
Tom two years ago.
