Upsets Occur; Navy, Oklahoma Win

It was another day of upsets
elsewhere in college football this
weekend. Nationally, the biggest to
fall was Kansas, the nation's
number three team. The Jayhawks
were toppled by Oklahoma 27-23.
In the ACC, Clemson retained the
lead with a 16-0 whitewash of
Maryland, NC State kept its title
hopes alive with a 17-15 squeaker
over Duke, and resurgent South
Carolina made it two in a row with
a convincing 34-21 upset of Wake
Forest.

Rain influenced the outcome of
many of the games around the
country, especially its eastern
sector. Navy's defense found it
advantageous, and the Middles
chalked up their second win of the
season with a 35-15 win over
faltering Georgia Tech. Yale and
Harvard eliminated the remaining
contenders for the Ivy League
championship. The Elis, led by
Brian Dowling and Calvin Hill,
rolled over Penn in Philadelphia by
a 30-13 score, and Harvard edged
Princeton 9-7.

On the West Coast, unbeaten
Southern California, maintained its
number one position with a
convincing 35-17 win over highly
regarded California. Trojan
quarterback Steve Sogge threw for
Southern Cal's first three scores
before the men from Berkeley
loosened up sufficiently to allow
O.J. Simpson to score the last two
with runs of 39 and seven yards.
The victory was a big step on the
Trojans road to the Rose Bowl.

Out in the Big Ten, Ohio State
continued on their path of
convergence with Southern Cal in
Pasadena. Despite the loss of Rex
Kern, a sophomore quarterback,
the Buckeyes rolled over a weak
Wisconsin squad 43-8 as Kern's
substitute ran for three TD's and
passed for a fourth. Michigan,
undefeated in the Big Ten, helped
to set the stage for the title game
by beating Illinois, 36-0. The
Wolverines meet Ohio State in two
weeks and the winner will celebrate
New Year's Eve in Pasadena with
O.J. & Co. In a nationally televised
game, Minnesota bottled up Leroy
Keyes and eliminated the
Boilermakers from the Big Ten race
with a 27-13 upset.

Tennessee, still unbeaten, got
another leg up on the Southeast
Conference championship, with a
night victory over Auburn. Georgia
is the only SEC team the Vols did
not defeat, and in that tie,
Tennessee was without the services
of Richmond Flowers. The
Bulldogs defeated Florida by a
crushing 51-0 score to remain in
that race.

Despite Oklahoma's upset,
Kansas is still in the driver's seat in
the Big Eight. The Jayhawks' in
state neighbors, Kansas State,
helped out immensely with a 12-0
upset that ruined Nebraska's
homecoming.

In major independent contests,
Army's Charlie Jarvis led the Cadets
in a 58-25 rout of Boston College.
Jarvis erased an Army single game
rushing record held by Doc
Blanchard rolling up 253 yards.
Notre Dame played everybody but
the cheerleaders against Pitt, but
the scrubs showed no mercy in
rolling up a 56-7 score over the
Panthers. Penn State, the nation's
number four team, defeated
powerful Miami behind the running
of Charley Pittman 22-7 and
remained in the ranks of the
unbeaten and untied. Syracuse had
little trouble with William & Mary,
defeating the Indians 31-0.
