Virginia Horsemen Dropped Close 3-2 Decision To Ivy League Power Last Weekend

Powerful Cornell University
downed the Virginia Polo Team by
the slim margin of 3-2 in a hotly
contested match this Sunday. The
game, for the most part a battle of
defenses, could have easily gone
either way.

Virginia opened with former
captain Willie McCormick at one,
captain Ray Norden at two, and
Rob Rinehart at back. In the
second chukker, Randy Jones was
substituted for Willie McCormick.
Cornell alternated captain Doug
Antzak, Paul Willson, Dan Ladd,
and Jeff Springer in the various
positions.

Cornell captain Antzak slipped
through the Cavalier defense to put
Cornell in the lead in the first thirty
seconds of play. Both teams then
tightened up their defenses, not
allowing any more goals that
chukker. Defensive action
continued in the second period;
despite several near-misses and
rapid maneuvering the two squads
went scoreless.

The third chukker remained the
same until captain Ray Norden was
able to crash through the stiff
Cornell resistance and tie the game.
The Cavaliers held back the Cornell
onslaught until the end of the
period, when Ladd managed to
sneak a shot through the uprights, a
mere one second before the close,
boosting Cornell to a 2-1 lead.

The final chukker continued the
fast-paced action. Captain Norden
broke the Cornell defense once
more to even the game up 2-2, only
to be countered by a score by
Cornell's Antzak raising their lead
to 3-2 only minutes before the end
of the game. A last-ditch Wahoo
effort was beaten back by the
formidable Cornell defense.
