Shelly Will Lead Offensive Charge As Cavaliers Seek To Avenge Last Year's Defeat Against VMI

The Cavaliers are out for
revenge against the VMI Keydets
this Saturday at Scott Stadium.
Last season, after most of the
bottles in the stands had dipped
below the halfway mark, the
Keydets slipped by the Cavalier
defense with the winning score.

This will be the 64th game of
the series between the two schools,
which started in 1893 with a 22-0
victory by the Wahoos. The
Cavaliers lead in the series 40-20,
with three ties.

In the last meeting, VMI
quarterback Russ Quay scored all
of the Keydets points on runs of
10, 1, and 15 yards. A touchdown
by Frank Quayle took the Cavaliers
to the locker room with a half time
7-6 lead and quarterback Gene
Arnette added 6 more points in the
third period to make it 13-6. Quay
took off in the final period
however, and his two scores put the
Keydets ahead for good, 18-13.

Despite the 44-6 score, in the
loss to the Purdue Boilermakers last
weekend, the widest margin of
defeat suffered by the Cavaliers
since being upended by Duke 42-0
in 1961, the Wahoos displayed the
type of courage and ability capable
of winning this weekend and every
weekend for the rest of the season.

Although the overwhelming
difference in stature and talent
between Purdue and VMI is
evident, the Keydets are not a team
to be taken lightly. Last Saturday's
loss to the Vanderbilt Commodores
was only the first for VMI in their
last five contests.

In addition to several promising
sophomores Coach Vito Ragazzo
has 17 starters and 25 lettermen
back from the squad that finished
6-4 last season.

On offense, the only new faces
are at quarterback and wingback.

Taking over for quarterback
Russ Quay, who left school to get
married after leading his team to
their first winning season in five
years, is 5-11, 175 pound
sophomore Murphy Sprinkel.
Sprinkle won the starting berth on
the basis of an outstanding spring
performance.

"Murphy is actually way ahead.
of Quay at this stage," says
Ragazzo. "Quay was not a polished
quarterback, but he had
determination and superior
confidence going for him. Sprinkel
is smarter in football sense and is a
better passer. He's mechanically a
fine quarterback and I have no
qualms about starting him."

Returning at halfback is Bob
Habasevich, the 200 pound senior
who made All-Southern Conference
first team last season and is almost
a certain repeater this year. Many
VMI partisans feel that Habasevich
has a good chance for a berth on
the All-America squad if he can
continue to display the talents
which were evident last season.

VMI Coach Ragazzo echoed the
feelings of several opposing coaches
and players following the
Virginia-Purdue game last week.
"Virginia is a solid team and we
respect them. Obviously the score
doesn't give a fair indication of the
quality of Virginia's team,
considering that they played the
top team in the country. Our main
job will be to correct the mistakes
we made against Vanderbilt,"
Ragazzo continued, "We can't
make those kind of mistakes in
Charlottesville and expect to win."
