Polo Men Ride Again;
Begin Swinging Soon

By Ted Mckean
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

Thundering hooves have finally
broken the long summer silence at
Brook Hill Farm this week, as the
Virginia Polo Team begins its
intensive training for the fall
season. The Varsity squad consists
mainly of experienced players from
last season, with the added support
of a highly qualified first-year man.

Coach Harry Robertshaw
predicts a definite improvement
over last year's 10-3 record, and
feels that this year's powerful squad
has a very good chance at the
Intercollegiate Championship.

The team's first encounter will
be with the Farmington Polo Club,
always a formidable opponent in
the past. The starting line-up for
Virginia will consist of former
captain Willie McCormick at one,
captain Ray Norden, a one goal
player, at the pivotal two position,
and first-year man Rob Rinchart, at
one goal, a welcome addition to the
team at number three.

Randy Jones, one of the
team's strongest players,
unfortunately suffered a broken
shoulder. He should be able to join
the team later on in the season.
Dave Liverett and Tom Robertshaw
will substitute when needed.

Farmington will mount a strong
four goal team against the Cavaliers.
Dr. E'D' Vere Nicoll will take one
position; Roger Rinchart, rated at
two goals, will hold the two
position; and Tom Lavery, like Dr.
Nicoll a one-goaler, will play back.

Once again, the Club makes its
appeal to all first-year men, or any
interested polo aspirants, to join
their ranks. Many graduates of the
University who played polo in their
collegiate days have found their
way to the ranks of club teams all
over the nation.

To have your own pony is not a
necessity: the Club maintains a
string of 18 to 24 polo ponies
during the spring and fall sessions.
While some players do bring their
own ponies, most use the Club
string.

Varsity letters are awarded in
polo. Because of its recent
recognition as a Varsity sport, all
team members must conform to the
Atlantic Coast Conference
eligibility rules.

The game against Farmington
should be well worth seeing. It will
be played at Farmington in the
arena at 8 p.m. Friday night.
