Carrington And Peter Schmidt Are Sated To Handle Cavalier Kicking Chores This Fall

On September 21 the Cavaliers
face what could be the no. 1 college
team in the nation in the Purdue
Boilermakers. Coach George
Blackburn's Wahoos have been
going through 2-a-day practices for
the past two weeks and after last
Saturday's scrimmage the Coach
stated, "I'm overly pleased with the
way we can through the
scrimmage physically and I
certainly liked what I saw, but I'm
far from being satisfied."

This year's squad is marked by a
host of veterans. Last year's entire
backfield is back. Frank Quayle and
Jeff Anderson are at the halfback
positions. Together they combined
for 1,529 yards with Anderson
holding a slight edge but Quayle is
generally considered to be the
workhorse.

Many sportswriters have
mentioned Quayle's name as a
possible All-American candidate,
after last year's pick as All-ACC.

Gee Arnette is the returning
quarterback who managed to place
3rd in total offense for the ACC
last season. In that season, against
Buffalo, he accounted for 5
touchdowns, a Virginia record.

Tight end Joe Hoppe made an
unexpected but welcomed return
when he found that his schedule for
his first year of law will allow him
to play football.

All-ACC choice Greg Shelly is
back to anchor the offensive line.
Chuck Hammer, Paul Rogers, Bill
Stone, and Dan Ryczek will round
out the Line. Don Lawrence,
former Notre Dame and
Washington Redskin tackle, now
coach for the defense, has a strong
unit.

Defense was stressed last year
and the Wahoos consequently
ended up second in the conference
in that department. Co-captain
Rick Brand at defensive tackle will
be the big man. The rest of the
defensive line consists of Tom
Patton, Rick Constantine, and A

Sinesky all who have experience.

Line backers will be Bob
Paczkoski, Boyd Page, and A
Ferrara. Bob Rannigan has been
handling the safety duties very
aptly.

Coming up from last year's first
year team will be a fine punter,
Hunter Richards. He averaged over
40 yards a punt and is looking to
prove himself this year in varsity
competition.

Tomorrow afternoon the team
will hold their second intra-squad
scrimmage for the coaches to look
at the team's progress. The
scrimmage will be held at Scott
Stadium at 3 p.m. and it is open for
spectators. Before the Varsity gets
underway, the first year team will
be scrimmaging.

These preliminaries will be over
next week as Purdue provides the
opposition at Lafayette, Ind. One
chartered jet airliner, the
Boilermaker Special, will make the
trip with 89 University of Virginia
football fans. It will depart from
Charlottesville at 9:30 and return
by 8:30 p.m. the same day. The
outing includes meals, tickets,
shuttle transportation, and libations
of one's choosing for the price of
$70.70. There are four more seats
available on the flight for the first
to ask.

Coach Blackburn and his staff,
with all their team's experience,
talent and depth, are looking to the
start of a fine season. Tuesday the
ACC sportswriters voted the
Wahoos second best in the
conference behind Clemson's Tigers
and just ahead of N. C. State's
Wolfpack.
