Cavaliers Face Defending ACC Champion Clemson In Doubleheader This Afternoon

Today the Cavaliers close their
season with the Clemson Tigers in
a double header at Lambeth Field.
Currently the Tigers are in second
position in the ACC standings.

Cavaliers Drop

It is something of a different
story with the University's team
as they have lost the last five
games and have consequently
dropped to 7th place in the ACC
standings with a 5-13 conference
record.

Hitting has been a weak point
as well as occasional trouble in
pitching. Only 3 runs have been
scored by the Cavaliers in the last
six games. Outfielder Steve Bryant
was leading the team in batting
with a .344 mark, good enough
for 6th in the ACC, but now
Joel DeBoe has taken over the
lead with an average of .333.
Second baseman Buzzy Schultz
has been playing well both in the
field and at bat.

Long Season

Clemson has a very well rounded
team which has already played
46 games. Tomorrow will mark
the end of their season, too. Pitcher
Nelson Gibson is leading the conference
in games won and Randy
Bray is currently batting at a clip
of about .350.

With extensive recruiting the
Clemson club has a wealth of
talent. Making up their squad this
year are six seniors, five juniors,
seven sophomores and seven freshmen.

Besides Gibson there are other
experienced pitchers in Larry Whitfield,
Bill Bonekat, and Laval
Johnson.

Disappointment

It has been somewhat of a disappointing
year for the Cavaliers,
who were supposed to be in the
thick of the ACC race, who lost
often in the early days of the
season and then fought back to
win 8 of the next 9 games. They
are looking to end the season
at home with a pair of good
games against a tough team.
