Cavalier High Jumper George Hawkins Goes Up And Over

Hawkins Came Close To School Record With Big Leap

The Virginia track team suffered
its second straight setback Tuesday,
this time at the hands of
Duke, 81-63. The Cavaliers once
more dominated the field events,
but the Blue Devils won six of
ten running events and showed
great depth, especially in the
hurdles and the distance races.

Harvey Wins Two

Virginia's Mike Harvey, nursing
an injured ankle, won the long
jump, 22′ 8″ and the triple jump,
46′ 11″. Al Sinesky captured the
shot with a toss of 49′ 5″ while
Mike Wilkes hurled the discus to a
137′ 3″ victory. Ham Myer was
the final Cavalier winner in the
field as he soared to 13′ 6″ in
the pole vault.

The 440 relay team, composed
of Ron Shorb, Tom Backer, Jeff
Calamos, and Pete Pettit, got Virginia
off on the right foot in the
running events as it coasted to
victory, aided by a poor Duke
exchange. However, the Blue
Devils then swept the mile, even
though Virginia's John Wilson ran
a 4:24.6, his best effort of the
year. The Devils also took the first
and second in the high hurdles
when Ed Campbell fell going over
the third hurdle.

First yearman John Morris and
co-captain Peter Pettit gave the
Cavaliers a glimpse of hope when
Morris captured the 440 in his
fastest time of the year, 48.9
seconds, and Petit won the 100
in 9.8. Morris has yet to be defeated
in the 440 in dual meet
competition. Yet, whatever hope
Virginia had of winning was extinguished
when Duke swept the
880 and gained a first and second
place finish in the 440 yard intermediate
hurdles.

Morris came back and won the
220 in his first attempt in college
competition when Pettit was disqualified
for running out of his
lane. The feature event of the
meet was the two mile, where
Rick Katz challenged a duo of
Blue Devils all the way to the tape.
Katz's time, 9:38 was 10 seconds
faster than his previous best but
still he managed only third place.

Carolina Relays

This defeat makes the Cavaliers
4-2 on the season with one dual
meet against N. C. State remaining
on the schedule. This weekend
the team will participate in the
Carolina Relays at Chapel Hill.
