Cavalier Runner Steals Second Against Blue Devils In Double Header

Virginia Dropped Three Tight Contests During Weekend To Wake Forest, Duke

The Cavalier baseball squad was
sailing along. They had won seven
of their last eight games. Then
all of a sudden, pow, pow, pow.
Three straight losses in two days.
On Friday, falling to Duke 6-3
6-1, and dropping a 7-5 contest to
Wake Forest on Saturday, spring
suddenly didn't look so beautiful
to the Virginia nine.

In Friday's doubleheader with
Duke, the Blue Devils didn't waste
any time in letting the Cavaliers
know they could play ball. With
one down in the first inning, left
fielder Tim Teer tagged a Bill Kelly
fast ball for a solo home run.

With two men on in the third,
Devil short stop Larry Davis belted
a two run triple. Teammate Randy
Blanchard followed with a sacrifice
fly to bring Davis home for the
fourth run of the game.

Duke second baseman Dick
Warren kept things going in the top
of the fourth with a home run.
A single by pitcher Steve Denison,
a base on balls, another single and
a sacrifice fly brought in the sixth
and final Blue Devil run of the
game.

In the bottom of the fourth,
Coach Jim West's charges decided
to get things going. Center fielder
Steve Bryant led off the inning
with an infield hit to the shortstop.
Yates Hall followed with a
clean single to center and Rowdy
Yates loaded the bases on a infield
error with no outs.

Denison worked second baseman
Bob Schultz to a full count
and then just missed the inside
corner to walk in the first Cavalier
run of the day. Another run
forced in on a walk to Dick
Hopkins sent Denison to the
showers with no outs and the bases
loaded.

Jeff Mitchell came in and got
Kalvin Moore and Charley White
to fly out bringing Yates home
from third on the sacrifice. Mitchell
ended the Virginia rally and the
scoring for the day by forcing Joel
DeBoe to ground out to first.
The inning ended with 3 runs in
the final score was 6-3 Duke.

Second Game

Again in the tailend of the
doubleheader, the Blue Devils
started off quickly. With one away,

Teer walked and Davis hit a fly
ball to center which Bryant misjudged
and fell trying to reach.
The ball flew over his head and
both men came home with the
first two runs of the game.

In the bottom of the first, DeBoe
reached second on a single
and an error. Two more singles
by Schultz and Bryant brought
DeBoe home and left men on first
and second. After loading the bases
with a walk to Hall, pitcher Phil
Wilhelm settled down and retired
the next eleven men to face him.

In the top of the third, Stan
Owens couldn't find the plate
and quickly loaded the bases with
three walks. Owens was then replaced
by Brad Jordan following
a single by Warren, which brought
home the third run for the Durham
Devils.

Jordan put down the next two
men to end the inning but Blanchard
came in on an infield out.

A walk and a triple by Davis
brought in another run, in the
fourth, and the final run of the
game came in the top of the fifth
on an infield hit by Wilhelm.

Against Wake Forest

Saturday's game with Wake
Forest didn't bring much relief
for the team, although they did
vary their style of losing.

With one away in the bottom of
the fourth, White walked, Bryant
singled, Hall walked, Boger walked
and Schultz walked bring in 2
runs to open the scoring.

Countering in the top of the fifth,
Wake Forest pitcher Bob Blanton
helped his own cause with a home-run.

In the bottom of the fifth DeBoe
singled and White doubled,
putting men at second and third.
A wild and a single by Hall
brought both men home, and gave
Virginia a 4-1 lead.

Bouncing back with singles by
Hopkins, Greer, and White, the
Cavaliers produced another run in
the bottom of the sixth.

Deacon first baseman Tom Berry
led off the top of the seventh with
a double and Blanton reached
base on an error by third baseman
Boger. Following outs by Bill
Myers and Doug Horner, shortstop
Craig Robinson walked and
second baseman Sonny Swails
singled in a run to cut the Virginia
lead to 4-2.

The bubble burst in the top of
the eighth, as Burgman and
catcher Heitman reached base on
errors, and Berry and Blanton
walked forcing in a run. After
Myers was retired, Horner walked
and Robinson reached base on an
error forcing in the fourth and fifth
runs for Wake Forest.

In the bottom of the eighth
pitcher Blanton saw hope for the
comeback, and knuckled down to
strike out the Virginia side.

The Deacons then proceeded to
sew up the game in the top of
the ninth when Callison led off
with a single and Burgman made it
7-5 by belting a home run to
to finalize the score.
