Five more Turtles will provide
entertainment in University Hall
tonight at 8:00 p.m., as
Virginia's hoopsters battle for fifth
place in the ACC.
The Terrapins who like the Cavaliers
also have ideas of finishing
at the top of the conference's
second division, will be the opposition
in the final basketball
game of the season. The Terrapins
are currently tied with Virginia
with a 4-9 ACC record for
fifth place.
The winner of this evening's contest
will earn the right to play
either N.C. State or South Carolina
in the first round of the ACC
tournament which begins March
7 in Charlotte, N.C.
The Wolfpack has been sliding
of late, and they are not favored
against the Gamecocks this weekend.
Thus a Virginia victory over
the Terrapins would place the
Cavaliers in position for a run at
a tournament semi-final berth.
Two weeks ago the Cavaliers
dropped an 85-76 decision to the
Terrapins at College Park. It is
this last item that could be the
important factor in tonight's contest,
for the Maryland squad's record
away from home is a miserable
1-11.
Virginia on the other hand has
played well in the plush confines
of University Hall this season.
Besides knocking off South Carolina,
Virginia has given the likes
of Duke, N. C. State and, most
recently, North Carolina tough
times in Charlottesville.
Maryland is led by sophomore
Will Hetzel, Pete Johnson, and
Billy Jones. Hetzel scored 26 points
and Johnson contributed 25 in pacing
the Terp attack over Virginia
in their first meeting. Virginia
placed four starters in double
figures in that game but fell victim
to a cold shooting hand coming
down the stretch.
Hetzel also set a Maryland
season mark with 17 rebounds
against Virginia. The Terp starters
are rounded out by Rich Drescher
and Rod Horst who together are
averaging only twelve points per
game.
