Cavayearlings Whip Tarbabies

By Tom Sansonetti

Although one stirring performance
went for naught Saturday
night, another did not. Early
arrivers for the UNC-Virginia clash
were treated to an exciting game
between the freshmen squads of
the two ACC rivals.

An unbelievably fantastic performance
by center Bill Gerry
and the cool head of Kevin Kennelly
brought the Cavayearlings a
hard earned 81-75 triumph. The
well timed strategic moves of
Coach Chip Conner, who deserved
the free ride his players gave him
to the locker room after the game,
aided the Virginia cause immeasurably.

Upsetting Defeat

The Tar Heel freshmen's' record
fell to 10-4 in what was for them
their worst defeat of the season.
They had lost only by one, two,
and three points to the freshmen
teams from Wake Forest, Duke,
and Clemson respectively.

A big factor in the game considering
that all of the other UNC
freshmen hit for their averages
was the fact that future star, Dave
Chadwick, could manage only ten
points. He had been ripping the
nets at the rate of twenty-one
points per game.

Gerry hit on 11 of 17 shots
from the floor and 10 of 11 from
the charity stripe in amassing a
grand total of 32 points. With less
than two minutes to go he faked
his defensive man out of position
and scored on a twisting lay up
to put the home team ahead for
good.

Then Kennelly took over in
directing a last minute stall for
which Coach Conner had wisely
prepared by sending in three
guards. After drawing the expected
intentional fouls from the desperate
UNC squad, Kennelly and John
Hill both hit the crucial foul shots
to ice the game.

Complementing these fine performances
were those of forwards
Bill Fulton and Bob Galione, Fulton,
who has sparked lately, hit
for twelve points but also corralled
three key rebounds in the
last four minutes of play. Galione
was the Cavayearlings' second
leading rebounder with seven.

Virginia shot at an outstanding
44.4% clip with many baskets
coming on long outside shots over
the Carolina pine-tall zone. Foul
shots poured through the hoop at
a 77% clip.

The victory was especially sweet
considering the twenty points loss
Virginia had suffered earlier in the
season to UNC. The freshmen season
ends February 28 with a home
game against Maryland's frosh.
