Wrestlers Take On NC State Next Week On Raleigh Floor

The Cavalier wrestlers swamped
the Generals of Washington and
Lee Tuesday night in University
Hall by a score of 27-6. While
their effort was not, on the whole,
as good as that of last week's
match with Duke, it was more
than too much for the beleaguered
visitors from Lexington.

Bright Start

Virginia swept the first five
matches, two of them with pins.
Dave Williams extended his dual
meet record to 6-1-1 with an easy
victory over W& L's Raz Razberry
in the first bout at 123.

In typical fashion, Williams' victory
consisted mainly of countermoves
and containment tactics. A
good measure of his superiority
was his six minute advantage
in riding time. The score of the
bout was 6-0.

Second Straight Pin

Captain Jon Shurberg proved
the permanency of his return to
the form he displayed last year
with his second fall of the week.
This one came at the expense of
Mark Hendrickson at 2:33 of the
third period. Shurberg was enjoying
an 8-2 lead when the pin
came.

At 137, third-year man Chuck
Wescott recorded his second
straight victory, a 4-0 win over
the Generals' Whit Morrill. Wescott's
match was close, with a
second period reversal being the deciding
factor.

John Pegues gave the Cavaliers
their second pin of the night,
decking Charlie Ross with only
1:25 gone in the first period.
The first-year man has had the
misfortune of wrestling in a very
strong division this season, and
the win was only his second. It
should bolster his confidence for
the remaining bouts of the season.

Moore Wins 10-3

At 152, Tom Moore started
slowly against Jack Ross. But in
the second period, and again in the
third, Moore came on with several
takedowns and a predicament that
added another two points to his
score. An additional two points
for riding time upped Moore's
winning tally to 10-3.

Washington and Lee's first win
came at 160, when Jay Thiemeyer
earned a 6-2 decision over Ron
Bright.

At 167 pounds, the younger of
the Moore brothers, Ted, won his
first varsity match with a tight
3-2 decision over W&L's Jay
Clarke. Behind though practically
all the match, Moore secured his
victory with a second period escape
and a reversal that came with
50 seconds left in the bout.

Mac Horton suffered the worst
of the two Cavalier defeats in
the ensuing battle at 177. Dan
Webster shut him out, 8-0. Horton
was never in the match.

Virginia's final win, and its
finest performance of the night,
was turned in by Jay Douglass
at heavyweight. Douglass, a 167
pounder subbing for the injured
Rick Constantine, climaxed the
evening with a pin over Waugh
Crigler.

Douglass inflated himself to
about 180 for the bout, but he
still gave away about 50 pounds
to Crigler. The fall came at 1:08
of the final period.

Last Chance

For the final match of the season
against N. C. State this Monday
in Raleigh, Coach Mike
Caruso plans several lineup
changes.

Ted Moore, rounding into form
after a mid-season injury, will drop
down to 160, with Jay Douglass
relinquishing the heavyweight spot
to Constantine to move in at 167.

A victory over the Wolfpack
would greatly enhance the seed
for the Cavaliers in the upcoming
ACC championships.
