Crew Club Practices On The Rivanna Reservoir

Rowers Enter Second Season With Full Schedule

With warm weather fast approaching,
the crew club has begun
its conditioning program of
alternate days of running and
weight lifting. The oarsmen hope
to be able to get on the water
by the last week in February,
but as of now the ice on the
Rivanna Reservoir at Redbrook
Farm where the team practices
seems to be gaining ground after
almost all of it melted in the
warmth of last week.

Last year was the first year of
crew at the University with the
enthusiastic Steve Plott organizing
and sustaining the club. There
were only 3 races in that first
season in which the oarsmen could
do little more than gain experience.

However, this year the club is
planning a full schedule opening
in the first week of April and ending
with the Dad Vail Regatta
in Philadelphia for small colleges
in the middle of May.

This Saturday the crew club will
be getting a new $2500 shell which
is now being held in Washington.
The team is also hoping to get
another shell in order to put four
on the water.

Right now the crew club is still
interested in recruiting new members
to fill the shells. There will
be some experienced rowers returning
with six out of the first
eight oarsmen coming back.

In order to raise money for
their new shells the crew club is
sponsoring a raffle of which tickets
will be sold starting Monday.
The prizes will be from the merchants
on the Corner. The drawing
for the prizes will be held at
the season's only home meet on
April 13 against RPI.

During the spring break at the
end of March when the crew will
be staying in Charlottesville to
practice the Yale crew team may
stop off at the University on its
way to the races in Florida. The
Yale team, traditionally a power
in crew, can help the University's
inexperienced group by setting a
good example.

During April the crew will go
to East Carolina on the 6th, return
to Redbrook Farm on the
13th, go to Washington on the
20th to face George Washington,
Howard, Villanova, and Temple,
and then travel to Richmond on
the 27th to face RPI again.
