Terps Defeat Hoopsters
In Conference Contest

By Sandy Prater
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

A full court press deployed at
the outset of the game by the Maryland
Terrapins caught Virginia unaware,
and gave the Terrapins the
momentum necessary to defeat the
surprised Cavaliers, 85-76, in an
ACC basketball game at College
Park last night.

Sacrificing height for speed,
Coach Frank Fellows replaced
6′ 6″ Rod Horst with Tom Milroy,
the Terps built up a commanding
early-game lead which
Virginia was never able to overcome.

Paced by Sophomore center Will
Hetzel, younger brother of former
Davidson hoop All-American,
Fred Hetzel, Maryland forged ahead
22-12, midway in the first
half, and managed to withstand a
Virginia to take a 37-34
halftime lea

At the beginning of the second
half, the two teams swapped
baskets, and Virginia eventually
pulled to within one point of
the Terps, at 60-59 with nine
minutes remaining in the contest.
From that point, the game broke
wide open. Led by Hetzel and
6′ forward Billy Johnson, Maryland
upped their margin to as
much as 11 points, and were never
seriously threatened during the
remainder of the game.

Hetzel and Johnson Star

Hetzel and Johnson were the
big guns for Maryland, accounting
for 53 of the Terps' points between
them. Johnson, who was held to
six points the first half, came
back with 19 markers in the second
to wind up with 26 for the night.
Hetzel, as well as being leading
scorer of the game with 27 points,
was also the top rebounder for the
Terps, and led them surprisingly
to rebounding dominance over the
Cavaliers.

The scoring duties for the Cavaliers
were handled by Norm Carmichael
and Tony Kinn, who
scored 18 and 19 points respectively.
Carmichael was the scoring
leader in the slow moving first
half, outscoring Hetzel with 12
points, and in the second half Tony
Kinn picked up the slack netting
15 points, most of them coming
in the waning minutes of the half.

The loss drops the Cavaliers
record to 6-14, with a 3-8 record
in Conference play, placing them in
sixth position in the ACC.

Cavayearlings Lose

The Virginia Cavayearlings preceded
the varsity's loss with their
seventh defeat of the season, as
they dropped an 89-90 decision to
the Baby Terps.
