Star Quarterback Duhon
Guides Erratic Tulane
By Paul Larsen
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer
New Orleans is the city of the
Mardi Gras, the French Quarter,
Al Hirt, and Tulane University.
Although the first three components
of this brightly-lit city
offer the visitor various kinds of
vicarious entertainment, it is the
Green Wave that will host the
Cavaliers this Saturday night to
their style of Southern hospitality.
Sporting the identical 3-5 record
of their opponents, Tulane
will present a team that has had
one of the more grueling schedules
of the fall season. Saturday afternoons
have brought the New Orleancans
face to face with such
formidable competition as Miami
of Florida. Air Force, Georgia
Tech, Vanderbilt, and second-ranked
Tennessee. It is the type
of schedule that builds character.
Led by Quarterback Bobby
Duhon, Tulane will enter the game
looking for their fourth victory
in as many starts against Virginia.
Duhon rolled up 121 yards
against Tennessee's potent defense
to become Tulane's all-time top
yardage-maker. With 838 yards to
his credit this season, the left-handed
quarterback needs just 162
more for his third straight season
over the 1,000 mark.
Warren Bankston, the 220
pound Green Wave fullback,
stomped out an even 100 yards
against powerful Tennessee to
reach the century mark in rushing
for the second time. The big
junior is familiar to Cavalier fans
as the second-string quarterback in
last year's 20-6 Tulane victory
in Scott Stadium. Since moving
from quarterback to fullback three
weeks ago, Bankston has averaged
94.7 yards per game.
The only common opponent to
the two teams this season has been
North Carolina, whom the Cajuns
beat 36-11 five weeks before the
Cavaliers manhandled the Tar
Heels in their 40-17 victory last
Saturday. Their only other two
victories of this season came back-to-back
over two Southern powers.
Strong Georgia Tech went down
to defeat 23-12 and Vanderbilt fell
27-14.
The night game will be the last
home game of the year and also
the final time 18 seniors will have
the opportunity to perform for
Tulane. Fresh off a strong game
against Tennessee, the Green Wave
will bring an offensively strong
team into Tulane Stadium. The
offense proved it can move the ball
against almost anybody by riddling
the Vol defense for 285 yards.
Saturday night, while Basin
Street is in full swing and the
musicians of the famous jazz city
blow forth their harmonious melodies,
nearby Tulane stadium will
be filled with the shouts of support,
the cries of despair, and the
grunts of the athletic performers
who offer the entertainment of
sport.
