Cavalier Ace Jeff Anderson Slashes Through Line

Wahoos Face Old Rival North Carolina Today At 1:30

Four of the top ground-gainers
in the Atlantic Coast Conference
will swing into action at Charlottesville
this afternoon when the
North Carolina Tar Heels face the
Virginia Cavaliers.

Gayle Bomar, classy quarterback
of the Tar Heels, leads the
ACC in total offense with 1,127
yards. He has passed for 706
yards, hitting 64 of 131 passes,
and has picked up 421 more yards
on the ground.

Tough Twosome

Virginia counters with three big
yardage-gainers in quarterback
Gene Arnette, halfback Frank
Quayle, and fullback Jeff Anderson.
Arnette is fifth in total offense
with 934 yards. He has gained
720 passing.

Anderson and Quayle both rank
in the top five in the conference
in rushing figures. Anderson is
third with 540 yards while Quayle
is fifth with 517.

Carolina Coach Bill Dooley says
that Virginia has one of the top
offensive teams that the Tar Heels
have faced. "Quayle, in particular,
will cause us plenty of problems."
Dooley says. "He's certainly one
of the best halfback's that we have
seen or will see this football season."

Good Receivers

Carolina ends Peter Davis and
Charlie Carr are third and fourth
in the ACC in pass receiving.
Davis has netted 252 yards to
Carr's 222. Last season Carr set
an ACC pass-catching record with
52 catches, but Davis had one of
his finest games this year against
Wake Forest. He pulled in six
passes for 84 yards and scored the
Tar Heels' lone touchdown on a
24 yard play.

The Tar Heels go into this game
in good physical condition. Tailback
Saulis Zemaitis, who missed
last week's game against Clemson
with an injured ankle, will be on
the sidelines again. But Carolina
did not suffer any additional injuries
in the Clemson game which
will sideline players.

Carolina defeated Virginia six
straight times from 1958 through
1963. But the, Cavaliers have
bounced back to win the last three.
None of the present Tar Heel
players have ever played a winning
game against the Cavaliers.

Last Bows

It will be the final home game
for stars such as Stan Kemp, Braxton
Hill, Dennis Borchers, Pere
Gray, Paul Klingensmith, Mike
Jarvis, and Bobby Serino.

Jim Ralston, Bob Buchanan,
Mal MacGregor, Paul Lockwood,
Tom Zellers, John Naponick, Paul
Yewisiak, and Laurie Croft also
will be playing their last game on
Scott Stadium turf.

Coach Dick Kupec, who
scouted UNC in their 17-0 loss to
Clemson last week, commented,
"They have a well coached team,
but their record is not good. You
can compare them with us. They
have had breaks and they
have made mistakes. Carolina has
lost a few they could have won.
They have a good team and they
have a bustling ball club full of
fight."

Carolina and Virginia will be
meeting for the 72nd time in the
oldest collegiate rivalry in the
South. The two clubs first played
in 1892. Carolina leads the series
with 38 wins against 30 defeats
and three ties.
