Intrepid Burris Booters Close Out Season With State Tourney in Lexington

Three close but discouraging
losses to North Carolina State,
North Carolina, and Washington
and Lee have closed out the season
for the Cavalier soccermen. Only
the state tournament remains at
W&L.

A highly touted Wolfpack from
N.C. State invaded the land of the
Wahoos, and departed with a 4-2
victory under their belts. John
Taylor, offensive ace for the Cavaliers,
started the home team off
right.

State quickly retaliated with two
goals, only to have the score evened
by Steve Kleinman at 2-2 to end
the half. On the opening play of
the second Hal, a State man lofted
a towering shot at the Cavalier
goal. Goalie Dan Abramson found
himself too far out of the goal,
and tried in vain to stop the shot.

Another State shot from 35
yards out sailed in just out of
Abramson's reach, to end the
scoring in favor of the Wolfpack,
4-2.

North Carolina, perhaps the
toughest team in the conference,
just edged a fired-up Wahoo team
by a 3-2 score. Well stocked with
imports, the Tar Heels pushed
their lead to 2-0 by the end of the
third quarter.

At this point, a head by Barelay
Macon enabled captain Kleinman
to tally first for the Wahoos. On
a cross, Percy Montague quickly
evened the score at 2-2. Heartbreakingly
for the Cavaliers, they
saw their upset hopes disappear
as Carolina tallied the winning
goal in the final minute of play.

In the final contest of the season
Tuesday, W&L topped the Cavaliers,
4-2. The Generals jumped
off to a 3-1 lead by halftime, the
Cavalier's sole goal coming on
a shot by inside Rick Kunkle.

The score remained the same,
until, with 15 minutes left, Rob
Aronson booted the Cavaliers to
within a goal of the Generals,
3-2. W&L bounced back quickly,
however, to finalize the score at
4-2.
