Cavaliers Face Highly Touted NC State This Saturday

Assistant coach and scout Ned
McDonald, who scouted NCS in
their 28-7 victory over Duke agrees
with the national football
poll. Coach McDonald said,
"North Carolina State is a well
coached, well drilled football team.
They are strong on fundamentals
and they make very few mistakes.
They deserve their high position
in the poll."

North Carolina State after its
fine victory over Duke is now 7-0.

They hold victories over UNC
(13-7), Buffalo (24-6), Florida State
(20-10), University of Houston
(16-6), University of Maryland
(31-9), Wake Forest (24-7), and as
previously mentioned Duke (28-7).

Stingy Club

State has limited each team they
have played to one touchdown.
Their defense is led by All-American
Dennis Byrd (tackle), but he
will not be playing this week
because of a knee injury. The
other ten members of the defensive
team, however, are equally as impressive.
In fact, Coach McDonald
believes that there is little difference
between State's first defensive
team and the second team.

Steady On Offense

On offense the Wolfpack are a
ball control team. They have a
multi-type offense but they run
only a few basic plays. The trouble
is that they run them from different
formations and they run them
well.

As on defense, they make very
few mistakes and they are very
good at scoring after their
opponents make a mistake.

They like to run the ball, but
after drawing the opponents'
secondary in quarterback Jim Donnan
will throw the bomb over the
defensive secondary. Donnan has
two fine deep receivers in Harry
Martell (5 TD passes caught) and
Don Donaldson (2 TD passes
caught).

Fearsome Trio

The State running game is well
balanced. They have three backs
who have gained over 250 yards
on the ground. Tony Barchuk leads
the Wolfpack in rushing with 424
yards. Leon Mason (259 yards)
and Bobby Hall (258 yards) are
the other two outstanding backs.
Furthermore N.C. State has a
big and strong offensive line that
provides the backs with running
room.

To top it off NC State has the
best place kicker in the ACC in
Gerald Warren. Warren leads the
Conference in scoring with 46
points. (16 extra points and 10
field goals).
