Here Comes The Offense: Remember What Happened When They Were Last At Home?

Duke Comes Here Saturday For Homecoming; Should Be Tougher Than Buffalo's Bulls

It may be one battle-royal of a
get-together when Duke and the
Cavaliers meet in Scott Stadium
Saturday afternoon.

The Blue Devils invade
Charlottesville after having successfully
attacked West Point last
weekend by upsetting the Black
Knights 10-7.

Jay Calabrese figures to be the
Blue Devil to watch as he strives
to approach closer and closer to
the all-time Duke career rushing
record set by Wray Carlton after
the 1958 season. The mark is
1785 yards.

Top Performer

The bullish back is the mainstay
of the Duke attack. If Virginia's
improved defense can contain him
the Cavaliers may well pull off
what looks to be a possible upset.

The Duke line in front of him
may be something troublesome to
contend with, however. Calabrese
even gave his blockers most of
the credit in the defeat that Duke
inflicted on the Cadets.

Virginia also has a strong running
game, although it is probably
a bigger surprise to the experts
than is Duke's. The game may
turn out to be a real test of ground
maneuvers and ball-control ability.

Thus defenses on both sides
should see a great amount of
action. No one from Durham can
really remember a quick, tight
Cavalier defense with good linear
speed so Duke may be surprised
to find one Saturday. The Wahoos
will have to get to Quarterback
Al Woodall in a hurry, however,
for though the man gains little
renown for his legwork, his passing
provides an excellent backdrop to
the talents of Calabrese.

Good Defense

The Blue Devils also feature
a stiff defense and if an edge is
to be given the visitors, it will
probably be based on this department's
showing. Duke's
secondary now has twelve interceptions
in four games with the
thefts being shared by eight different
players. Andy Beath has
picked off three to lead the pack,
but Greg Wuerstle and Dick Biddle
trail closely behind with two each.

Thus it should be both a tough
and an important contest for the
two protagonists.

It should be a pivotal game for
the Cavaliers, for a win Saturday
would be a big step toward a
successful season. The Cavaliers
have an added incentive to win
when one considers the revenge
factor: Virginia has not beaten
Duke since 1958. Victory should
come more often than once every
nine years.
