Cavayearlings Meet Tar Babies Today

By Ted McKean
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

This afternoon the Cavayearling
football squad plays host to the
Tar Babies of North Carolina at
Scott Stadium. With the taste of
victory over VPI still fresh from
last week, head coach Jim Alderman
considers this contest the highlight
of the season for his Cavaliers.

For Alderman, nothing could
be finer than a victory over his
alma mater. In his words, "I
cheer for North Carolina 90% of
the time, but when they play us
it's a different story."

Fortunately for the Yearlings, no
serious injuries were incurred
against Tech last week. In preparation
for this week's battle, Alderman
commented, "We have had
some good practices since the Tech
game; the squad looks real sharp."

Captaining the pack this week
will be Quarterback Bill Kettunen
and middle linebacker Charlie
Blandford, the winning combination
from last week.

The explosive offense which the
Cavayearlings showed the Hokies
last week may be well-rivaled by a
strong offense on the part of the
Tar Babies. As North Carolina
State found last week, the Babies
have quite an able quarterback in
Ricky Lanier.

Lanier, equally able as a runner
and passer, showed the Wolfpack
why he was chosen High
School All-American, as he led the
Heels to victory over State.

His quarterback spot, however,
is not so secure. North Carolina
coach Fred Mueller has two other
top-notch players in John Swofford
and Mike Hipps, each seeking
to grab Lanier's position.

Up front, the Tar Babies will
also present more of a problem
to the Cavaliers than did the
Hokies. Their line will be manned
by a bevy of 220 pounders who
will be trying to open holes for their
fleet backs.
