Backs Accumulated 400 Yards Rushing Saturday To Reveal Surprising Ground Attack

With the season's first victory
safely put away, the Cavaliers
will head South on Saturday night
to meet Wake Forest in Winston-Salem.
This will be Virginia's
twelfth game with the Deacons,
although the series started as far
back as 1889.

Last year Virginia played host to
Wake in the season's opener at
Scott Stadium, and Bob Davis
and Co. walked off with six Wake
Forest fumbles and a 24-10 victory.
The Deacons' last triumph was in
1964, by a 31-21 count.

Long Streak

The confines of Bowman Gray
stadium will definitely be a welcome
sight for the Deacons since
all of their last four games have
been losses on the road.

They finished last year with a loss
to Florida State in Tallahassee,
and this year have seen successive
losses to Duke, 30-13 in Raleigh,
Clemson 23-6 in Death Valley,
and to number two ranked Houston
50-6 in the Astrodome last
weekend.

Coach Bill Tate will be hoping
that the end of this road trip
will also be the end of the
losing streak for the Deacons,
for a loss in this game could be
the proverbial straw that might
ruin his team for the rest of the
season.

Opinion in Winston-Salem is
that the Deacs have the personnel
but that they have been plagued
by inconsistency due to a constant
shuffling of talent in the offensive
backfield.

Power Test

For the Cavaliers this is the
game in which they can prove
to the rest of the ACC that the
decisive trouncing of Buffalo was
no fluke and that they will be a
power to be reckoned with in this
year's race for the conference title.

Coach George Blackburn's
charges have unveiled a powerful
running game to go with their
traditional passing attack, and
Coach Don Lawrence seems to
have found a method to impregnate
the Wahoo flanks.
