Bulls To Test Defense
With Fearsome Backs

By Bruce Franzel

This Saturday the Cavaliers will
face a much improved Buffalo
team boasting twenty-three returning
lettermen.

Junior Mick Murtha, now with
a year of varsity experience to
his credit, will be at the helm,
Last year, Murtha set three team
records, including one in the
passing department for 1,241
yards.

The defensive squad is two-thirds
veterans with co-captain Ted
Gibbons being the man to watch
for. This 232 pounder is the Bulls'
best lineman and he has started
every game for the past two years.
He is new to the tackle position
however, having shifted from linebacker.

Big Scorer

The big man for Buffalo will
be the nation's top touchdown
scorer in major college football,
Lee Jones: Last year Jones scored
sixteen touchdowns, greater than
the total output of the rest of
the team.

Tight end Dick Ashely suffered
torn knee ligaments in a recent
scrimmage and will likely miss the
entire season. In 1966 he caught
thirty passes for 411 yards and was
the holder of most of Buffalo's
receiving records. Coach "Doc"
Urich commented, "It is absolutely
the worst thing that could have
happened to us."

Replacement Questionable

Six foot 202 pounder Terry
Endress will take over the tight
end responsibilities, but he doesn't
have the speed, experience, or
blocking ability of Ashley. "We'll
just have to work harder," said
Urich, "it will hurt our running
game more than our passing attack,
but both will suffer."

North Carolina State defeated
Buffalo last week, but the Bulls
controlled the ball most of the
second half. Statistically, Buffalo
had 26 first downs to State's 11,
gained 224 yards rushing to 70,
and had 155 yards passing to
State's 157.

Buffalo may be the most underrated
team in the East, and they
are capable of giving the Wahoos
a tougher game than Army.
