Cagers Schetlick, Langloh, Newlen Sign Grants
By BILL BERNO
Cavalier basketball coach
Bill "Hoot" Gibson has helped
insure the future of his
program with the signing of
three outstanding high school
players in the past two weeks.
Adding to the depth at
guard will be 6-3 Bill Langloh
and 6-4 Mark Newlen, and 6-8
forward Ed Schetlick will
bolster the frontcourt.
Langloh was a stellar guard
for DeMatha High School in
Washington, D.C., helping the
Stags to a 29-1 record this
year. He scored 16 points,
passed off for eight assists, and
grabbed 9.5 rebounds per
contest.
A forward in the past,
Langloh can dunk easily, and
DeMatha coach Morgan
Wooten says, "I don't think
I've ever coached a more
complete player baseline to
baseline, one that could do
almost everything in every
category of basketball. He is
extremely sound
fundamentally, Virginia got a
great one in Bill."
Langloh said he narrowed
his choice to Virginia and
Duke, and chose the University
because he "particularly liked
the Virginia players, like Gus
Gerard and Wally Walker, when
I stayed with them when I
visited Charlottesville."
Besides being only the
fourth player in DeMatha
history to start all three years,
Langloh seemed to save his
best play for the big games,
when he was called upon to
score. He was the MVP in the
Alhambra tournament, an
invitational tournament for
Catholic schools from all parts
of the East.
Newlen was a three-year
star at Robert E. Lee High
School in Staunton. This year
he was the second-leading
scorer in the state with a 25.6
average, and was the
Outstanding Player in the
district tournament.
Newlen was first team
All-District and All-State,
leading his team to a 22-1
record before it lost out in the
regional tournament. He is the
all-time leading scorer at R.E.
Lee, with 1508 points in three
years.
Newlen, at 6-4 and 185
pounds, has the size to take
smaller men inside and shoot
over them. He averaged six
assists and 6.6 rebounds per
game.
Coach Gibson commented
on the signing, saying, "We're
tremendously pleased with
Mark's decision. He's a fine
young man with an
outstanding high school
background and will be a good
addition to our program."
Newlen is also a fine
baseball player, batting .350
his junior year and being
selected Most Valuable Player.
His one football letter gives
him a total of seven varsity
letters in three years at R.E.
Lee. In addition, Mark is
president of his senior class.
Schetlick is a 6-8,
220-pounder from Peddie
School in New Jersey. He
played center on Peddie's 24-1
team this year, but there are
some indications that he will
see action at both center and
forward at the University.
Peddie won the state prep
school championship with
Schetlick averaging 15 points
and 14 rebounds per game. He
shot 48 per cent from the
floor.
Al Lozier, the Peddie coach
said, "Ed is the best big man
I've ever had at the school."
The recruiting season is still
exhausting for Coach Gibson
and his assistants Mike Schuler
and Chip Conner. All three
coaches will be on the road for
several more weeks trying to
add to the talent already
brought into the fold.
