Wahoo 'Heros' Cross Sticks At Towson

By FLETCHER THOMPSON

Virginia's second-ranked
lacrosse team makes another
foray into the lacrosse-happy
city of Baltimore this Saturday
to see what it can do about
convincing the doubting
Thomases who weren't
sufficiently impressed with last
week's Hero's Invitational
victory.

Doing the dirty work for
top-ranked Johns Hopkins will
be Towson State,
eighth-ranked in the USILA
poll. Face-off time is 2.

Lacrosse fortunes have been
on the upswing for the
Bearcats in recent years,
according to Wahoo head man,
Glen Thiel. "Towson used to
be just a small teachers' college
with a small-time program,"
says Mr. Thiel. "In the last
couple of seasons, their
program's really improved. I'd
say they've got a real good
team."

A first-round loser to
Carling in the Hero's tourney
by an 11-7 score, Towson has
recorded a 2-1 mark for the
year. The Bearcats opened the
season with a 21-11 thrashing
of unranked Syracuse and
knocked off Cav victim Brown
in overtime, 7-6.

It was only the Brewers'
fine goalie that saved them
from disaster, though, says the
lacrosse boss. If the Wahoos
want to have an undefeated
record on April Fool's Day,
they will have to avoid a
post-Hero's letdown.

The Bearcats' principle
strength, by Mr. Thiel's
estimation is depth. "They run
a lot of guys at you. We'll have
to be in good shape to beat
them," claims Mr. Thiel.

Spearheading the `Cat
attack is Timmy Havens, who
conspires with a swarm of
teammates to give ulcers to
opposing goalies. Attackman
Havens and his mates will be
the responsibility of Cav
starters Bruce Mangels, Boo
Smith, and Ed Spencer with
fourth man Ted Coburn slated
to spell them.

Towson's mid-field features
oldster Larry Stratton, who
decided to give college ball a try
after several years as a club
all-star. Ken Darcangelo and
Larry Gross will accompany
Stratton on his goal-to-goal
jaunts.

Bearcat captain Wendell
Thomas, a senior defense man,
will probably be given the
assignment of playing Cav Tom
Duquettes's Siamese twin for
the afternoon.

Joining Duquette at attack
for the Wahoos will be
fourth-year man Rick
Bergland, who is tied with
Duquette for the team scoring
lead with nine, and third-year
man John Eppler. Mr. Thiel has
reserve Barry Robertson
penciled in to see a considerable
amount of time.
