Victory Eludes Cavs
ST. LOUIS, Mo.-Five seconds disappeared off the clock and a
Jim Hobgood last-gap shot went in and didn't count.
Such misery was the lot of the Wahoos as they dropped
into the runner-up spot of the St. Louis Invitational, losing the
finale to the host Billikens, 75-74, December 29.
The Cavaliers began their quest for the title, characterized
by the slogan "two for '72", with a 72-58 victory over
Georgetown in first -round action, December 27.
After an unusual one-night break due to the concurrent
first-round hockey events of the tournament, the 'Hoos went
at it with the Billikens, who had met and dispatched four of
five opponents.
Harry Rogers, St. Louis' "Mr. Versatility", lived up to his
advance billing by scoring the Billikens' first 15 points and
leading them to leads as big as 13 points.
Nevertheless, the Cavaliers showed poise beyond their years
and held St. Louis to a 38-38 standoff at halftime.
St. Louis still managed to come back to lead by seven with
four minutes left. Again the Cavaliers rallied but victory
eluded them when a timeout called with :06 left on the clock
was not registered until :01 was left.
The 'Hoos' Hobgood diverted an incoming Billiken pass but
his game ending shot was disallowed as it left his hands after
the buzzer.
