The ACC completed its first
week of play Saturday, having
registered an 11-1 slate against
exclusively non-league
opposition.

By far the most impressive
performance was turned in by
Virginia's Friday night
opponent Wake Forest. The
Deacons, underdog to Alabama
which was ranked 17th in the
nation preseason by Sports
Illustrated,
upset the Tide
Saturday night, 94-88, to take
the championship of the Twin
City Classic, for which they
were the host team.

Wake Forest had won its
first round game with Florida
Southern, 60-52, Friday night.

Destroying patsies
Appalachian State, 133-50, and
Atlantic Christian, 110-40,
N.C. State introduced its new
high-powered offense led by
sophomore flash David
Thompson. Thompson netted
33 against Press Maravich's
ASU club and against Atlantic
Christian the prodigy scored 32
points, 26 coming in the
second half.

The Maryland Terrapins
opened their season with a
127-82 win over Brown and an
82-50 splurge over Richmond,
in the opening game at UR's
new Richmond Coliseum.

After crushing Biscayne of
Florida last weekend, North
Carolina took on Pittsburgh,
about whom Coach Dean
Smith was at least publicly
apprehensive.

No problem. Veterans
Bobby Jones and George Karl
combined for 41 points in a
99-70 romp over Buzzie Ridl's
Panthers.

Duke was just as impressive
as the Tar Heels Saturday
night. William & Mary kept the
Blue Devils from scoring 100
points, something it hadn't
been able to do against its first
two opponents, but still lost
98-74 at Durham.

Frontcourt men Alan Shaw
and Chris Redding combined
to give Duke a 55-32
rebounding edge over the
smaller Indians, with Redding
scoring 22 points, followed by
Kevin Billerman with 16 and
Gary Melchionni with 14.

Clemson, which had started
successfully with a win over
Georgia Tech in mid-week,
succumbed to Terry Holland's
Davidson club, 65-59, Saturday
night at Charlotte. Sophomore
Ricky Hunt led all Tiger
scorers with 17 points against
the Wildcats. Mike Browning
added 10.
