Sullivan Up For ACC Honors,
Joins Six Other Cav Gridders

By BILL BERNO

Now that the football season
is almost history, it's time to
start handing out individual
laurels, one of which is
All-ACC recognition.

The conference has released
a list of nominees for the
accolade, compiled from
suggestions of the individual
schools. The ACC
Sportswriters Association will
conduct balloting to determine
the members of the final
squad.

Virginia's Cavaliers have
seven players nominated,
including Wahoo Player of the
Year Dave Sullivan. Along with
Sully on the offensive side are
tackle Bill Farrell and center
Paul Ryczek. Defensively,
ends Stanley Land and Billy
Williams were placed on the
ballot along with second-year
tackle Dick Ambrose.

Billy Maxwell was one of four
kickers nominated for all-loop
honors.

UNC, NCS Monopolize

League powerhouses North
Carolina and N.C. State were
the only two schools to have
players nominated at every
position. Most of the players
were chosen because of
superior statistics or repeated
selection as ACC Player of the
Week.

Shaw Favored For QB

Most interesting balloting
should take place in the
quarterbacking category. Three
outstanding nominees have
been selected. Bruce Shaw,
who held the reins of State's
explosive attack and led the
league in passing and total
offense, has a tenuous edge.

Nick Vidnovic, leader of the
champion Tar Heels, will
challenge Shaw as will Mark
Johnson, a sophomore who put
fire in the Duke offense after

gaining a starting job in
mid-season.

Another close race will be
for the two running back spots.
Willie Burden and Stan Fritts
of State, Wade Hughes of
Clemson, Steve Jones of Duke,
the leading rusher, and Ike
Oglesby of UNC are the
nominees.

Surest bets seem to be
Sullivan, All-American tackle
Ron Rusnak of UNC, Duke's
defensive anchorman Ed
Newman, and workhorse
tailback Jones.
