Sullivan Gains Fame

Jones Earns Honor

By FLETCHER THOMPSON

Among the more notable
matters to come out of last
Saturday's 37-13 pasting that
the Cavaliers received at the
hands of Duke were two ACC
players of the Week and a new
Virginia record-holder.

Unfortunately for the
Wahoos both Players of the
Week were on the other side,
while split end Dave Sullivan
broke one school mark and
tied another with a relatively
sub-par performance.

Sullivan's two catches for
17 yards broke halfback Frank
Quayle's career record for most
yardage with 1149 and tied
him with John Pincavage for
lifetime receptions with 90.

Offsetting Sullivan's
moment of glory was the fact
that the Cavs allowed their
opponents to earn laurels for
both Offensive and Defensive
backs of the Week.

Honored Offensive back was
Blue Devil tailback Steve
Jones, who devastated the
'Hoos with 188 yards in 28
trips and three touchdowns.

Jones, a senior from
Sanford, N.C., came off an
injury suffered last yea r in an
automobile mishap, which
sidelined him for much of the
1971 season, to lead his
teammates to their initial
triumph after three losses.

Enjoying the second best
performance of his career,
Jones became the first Duke
runner to surpass the 2,000
yard barrier after chalking up
175 yards in the first half.

His counterpart in the
defensive backfield was
teammate Bill Hanenberg who
intercepted an errant Cav
throw and stymied
league-leading pass catcher
Sullivan.
