Tech And VMI Remain On The Cavalier Baseballers' Schedule

The Cavalier "B" squad
rolled to the Zone Tuesday to
edge the Madison baseball
team, 6-5.

The only Wahoo regular
who saw action in the
exhibition contest was
leftfielder Pete Anderson ,as the
second-teamers showed their
stuff under the lights in
Harrisonburg.

The Madison College
batsmen scored first in the
second inning, with the Dukes'
slugger Pete Jones getting the
first of the two runs he scored.

Virginia answered with two
runs in the top of the third. Al
Griffen led off with a hit that
turned into a two-bagger on a
Madison error. Outfielder
Howle Jordan knocked Griffen
in with a hit, moved to second
on a passed ball, and scored on
Anderson's sacrifice fly.

The Cavaliers added runs in
the fifth and sixth innings with
first baseman Rick Temple and
Jordan crossing the plate.

The Zone had their big
inning in the bottom of the
fifth. Wahoo hurler Bill Harvey
loaded the bases with three
walks, and then threw a wild
pitch to scored the man from
third. But it didn't matter
anyway, as the next man up,
Pete Jones, blasted a pitch over
the right field fence to put
Madison up by a run.

Pitchers Control

After that, the game settled
down, as the opposing pitchers
took control of the game. The
three Virginia moundsmen
(Duane Harris, Harvey and
Doug Heatwole) threw an
excellent game, giving up only
four hits and two earned runs
over the nine stanzas.

As the game moved into the
top of the ninth, the Cavaliers

were still down by a run. Tom
Hall led off the frame with
a hit , and was moved up by
Larry Murray's bunt. Howie
Jordan knocked in Hall from
second base, and moved to
third on Tom Kayser's single.
The Dukes' pitcher Dobson
then served up a pitch to
Anderson, who lashed it deep
into the outfield.

Winning Run

Jordan then beat the
Madison outfielder's peg to
home. This proved to be the
winning tally since winning
pitcher Doug Heatwole held

off the Zonians in the last of
the ninth.

Coach Jim West's charges
close out their season this
weekend with two games at
Lannigan field. The VMI
Keydets come to
Charlottesville Saturday, and
the Gobblers from Virginia
Tech will be here Sunday as
the Cavaliers' final opponent of
the campaign.
