Eldredge Record Falls

UNC Succumbs 14-6 To Duquette— Led Laxmen

By CLARK EMERSON

Attackman Tom Duquette
became the all-time Virginia
career goal leader yesterday in
leading the Cavalier stickmen
past North Carolina, 14-6.

The fourth-year
attackman's best offensive
afternoon at the
University–five goals and four
assists–pushed his lifetime
scoring total to 97, two ahead
of Pete Eldredge, the most
valuable player in the country
last year.

In what was supposed to be
a tuneup for Saturday's ratings
showdown with top-ranked
Johns Hopkins, Virginia was
unable to dominate the
underdog Tar Heels throughout
the first half. The Cavaliers
opened an early four point
advantage behind goals by
Barry Robertson, Duquette,
Doug Cooper, and Jim Ulman.

But midway into the
second quarter, Carolina's
pride attackman, Bruce
Ledwith, threw in two
successive scores to bring his
team, if one was to believe the
Tar Heel bench, back into the
contest. The half ended with
Virginia up 4-2.

"I guess the boys were
looking ahead to Hopkins,"said
head coach Glenn Thiel. "We
wanted to move out early but
Carolina was too scrappy."

The third quarter was
different. The Cavaliers' shots
began to escape goalie Dave
Schreiner as Duquette, then
Cooper assisted by Duquette,
and Duquette again scored.
The last, from 18 feet, broke
Eldredge's record.

After another goal by 'Heel
Ledwith, Virginia streaked
with six scores. By now the
Cavalier attackmen were
moving well around the crease.
Successful plays were leaving
open men in front of the net.

Coach Thiel had another
explanation for his club's
second half turnaround.
"Before, we were throwing the
ball right into the goalie's
stick," he said. "When he was
protecting high, we'd shoot
high and when he was low,
we'd aim for the ground

"During the third quarter,
we took smarter shots. It was a
matter of scoring when we had
the opportunity."

The game was for all
practical purposes over The
majority of the Lannigan Field
spectators, who had withstood
piercing winds and even snow
flurries throughout the
afternoon, had left, and Thiel
emptied his bench.

Scottie Howe replaced
goalie Rodney Rullman, who
barely soiled his uniform in
registering three saves, much to
the credit of the Cavalier
defense Carolina was able to
attempt only 26 shots
compared to Virginia's 62
Schreiner was fortunate to save
2 of them

The Cavaliers out-elbowed
the 'Heels for ground balls,
58-35 Uncharacteristically, the
Wahoo midfielders were
whipped in face off
confrontations, 11-14

Ledwith's effort was
Carolina's only semblance of
offense. "The best senior
attackman in the country" as
he is known around Chapel
Hill's Sports Information
Office collected three goals, all
assisted His entire Tuesday
performance considered
though, Ledwith would seem
to provide no competition to
Duquette for post-season
honors.

Only in the fourth quarter
were other Tar Heels able to
connect.

Duquette, who has been
accorded second and third but
never first team All-American
honors, attempted only ten
shots. He now stands behind
Jay Connor in career points
and is fourth, with 78, in the
lifetime assist category

Besides Duquette's
impressive effort-only five
University players have scored
over nine points in a single
game–Ulman collected three
goals and two assists and
Robertson had two goals–the
second a crowd-pleasing fast
break culminating in a
behind-the-back shot that left
goalie Schreiner wondering
why his team scheduled the
'Hoos in the first place
