Four Others Named

Johnson Heads ACC

By CLARK EMERSON

Quarterback Mark Johnson
of Duke, returning from a
pre-season injury, led the slate
of Players of the Week,
Monday, in ACC balloting.

Johnson, in his first start at
quarterback since a collarbone
injury, rushed and passed for
168 yards and two touchdowns
in leading the Blue Devils to a
20-14 win over Maryland. One
of the sophomore's runs was a
68-yarder, longest in the ACC
this season.

Also praised were offensive
guard Bill Yoest of N.C. State,
Frank Wirth, a defensive
lineman from Clemson, and
Phil Lamm, a North Carolina
tackle.

Yoest was graded at 81
percent efficiency and was
credited for five "complete
domination blocks" by the
Pack coaching staff. Against
the highly-touted East Carolina
defensive line, he opened holes
for three of the five N.C. State
touchdowns.

In the game's first seven
minutes, the Tigers' Wirth
dropped Virginia's runners for
a minus 25 yards, including
three sacks of quarterback
Scott Gardner and a tackle of
punter Billy Maxwell.

Lamm was selected the top
player of the Wake-North
Carolina game by the ABC
broadcasting crew covering the
game. The junior cornerback
intercepted a late Deacon pass
on his own goal line and batted
down four others.

Rookie of the Week was
Dave Buckey of N.C. State.
The freshman quarterback,
who started over ACC total
offense leader Bruce Shaw,
directed four touchdown
drives. He scored one himself
before being injured in the
third quarter.

Buckey gained 128 yards in
three quarters, 74 yards on 5
of 6 passes and 54 yards by
rush on 14 carries.
