Tomorrow At Maryland
Harriers Open Season
By STEVE GASKE
Tomorrow morning the
Cavalier Cross Country team
opens it's season against
Maryland and the University of
Richmond in a meet to be held
on the University of Maryland
golf course at 11:00 a.m.
This year's edition of the
Cross Country team will be led
by team Captain Phil Meyer.
Phil was the leading runner on
the team last year in addition
to being a Phi Beta Kappa
scholar.
Returning harriers Mike
Pace, Gerry Hart, Greg Lane,
and Jim Wood should provide
enough depth to take up some
of the slack left by the loss of
Co-captains Brew Barron and
Mike DeCamps.
Coach Lou Onesty is
optimistic about this year,
because of the turnout of
about twenty-five people
trying out for the team this
year, which is the largest
turnout ever. He also
commented that "I really don't
have to push them very hard,
because they're a hard working
bunch of boys and push
themselves."
Coach Onesty is especially
impressed with the showing of
Joe Williams, a mediocre
runner last year who worked
hard over the summer and
should contribute greatly to
this year's team.
Another surprise has been
first-yearman Bob Peckt from
Benedictine High School in
Richmond. Peckt has been
among the leaders in practice
and should be one of the top
men in his first year.
In last year's meet Maryland
shut out both opponents, but
should be weakened by the loss
of All-American miler John
Baker and Russ Taintor, the
holder of all the Maryland
distance records, including the
record for tomorrow's course.
Captain Phil Meyer
This year's Maryland team
should still be tough since
Maryland usually gives at least
five scholarships a year and
starts organized practices in
August. Freshman Otto
Mazzoni led the qualifiers in
last week's time trials and
should be closely followed by
Dan Rincon, Ken Umbarger,
and Al Carey.
Richmond doesn't have an
especially strong team and
should have the weakest
showing tomorrow. Maryland,
however, should provide the
Cavs with some very stiff
competition.
