Beach Leads The Charge

Lacrosse Team Runs Over Roanoke

BY JOHN MARKON

Setting a record for most
points in Scott Stadium for a
Virginia team this season, the
Cavalier lacrosse team generally
had things all their own way as
they waltzed to a 21-4 victory
over Roanoke College in a
Saturday afternoon game.

Almost everyone played,
fifteen different players scored
and before the first half was
over the second attack and the
fourth midfield units had
already seen action. By the
fourth quarter there were
people coming off the bench
with the drawstrings still
undone on their sweat pants to
score goals.

Before the game was one
minute old All-American
attackman Jay Connor and
midfielder Bob Proutt had
already scored and at the end
of the first period the Cavs had
an untouchable 7-1 lead. Never
had dominance been so quickly
or so unquestionably asserted.

In Roanoke the Wahoos
were playing a team that had a
few good players but very little
depth of talent. The Maroons
picked up ground balls poorly,
let Virginia clear with ease
while struggling with their own
clears, and did not have a
defense to contend with
Messrs. Connor, Tom Duquette
and Rich Beach, Virginia's
powerful first attack.

Team statistics were heavily
weighted in the Cavaliers'
favor. The Cavs outshot
Roanoke 66 to 18, won 24 of
29 faceoffs and snatched 101
ground balls to the Maroons'
58.

Busy Goalies

Roanoke goalies Bill Ward
and Pat Kelley were called
upon to make 30 saves while
two Cavalier net minders made
seven between themselves. Rod
Rullman played the first three
periods and, benefited by
strong defense, had to make
only three saves. John Gaughan
played the last quarter and
accounted for the other four.

Cavalier scoring was paced
by the crease attack position
with starter Beach garnering
three goals and an assist and
substitute Chip Barker
pumping in three more goals.
Joining Beach in the four-point
club for Virginia were Connor
(two goals, two assists) and
All-American midfielder Pete
Eldridge (three and one).

Bergland Injured

Three point scorers aside
from Barker were Duquette
(two and one) and midfielder
Jim Ulman (one and two).
Rick Bergland, a second-team
attackman, also scored two
goals and was playing very well
when an ankle injury shelved
him midway through the
fourth quarter.

All four Roanoke goals were
scored by either Tom Pitts or
Bill Doxannis, each of them
getting two. Doxannis and
Larry Mackall also received
credit for assists.

Strong Faceoffs

Other Cavaliers deserving of
mention were the three-man
faceoff crew of Steve Nauss,
Greg Montgomery and Greg
Dickerhoof, and the defense,
which allowed Roanoke hardly
any penetration while the
Maroons' back line was easy
prey for the fakes and passes of
the Cavalier attack, at times
resembling the proverbial
Chinese fire drill.

Unseasonably cold weather
kept the crowd down to
somewhere under 2,000 and
many of those not fortified
with spirits fermenting against
March's icy blasts were
premature departees. The Cavs
are now 1-1 on the season and
1-0 against college opponents.
Their next opening will be
against Dennison in the first
round of the Hero's
tournament in Baltimore on
Thursday afternoon.

Other teams entered in the
Hero's field are Army,
Cortland State, Brown, the
Maryland Lacrosse Club,
Towson State and the Long
Island Lacrosse Club, last
year's national club champions.
