Second Half Nightmare

PSU Shocks Cavs, 86-74

It was the case of a
recurring nightmare for the
Cavaliers last night against
Penn State and this time they
never woke up as the Nittany
Lions outlasted the Wahoos,
86-74, at University Park.

The State guns came out
blazing last night and center Ed
Chubb and guard Ron Brown
sparked an outburst that gave
the Lions a 25-13 lead midway
through the first quarter. The
Cavaliers missed their first five
shots from the field and
committed numerous turnovers
during the opening minutes but
nobody could have stopped
State's miraculous shooting

A couple of substitutions
and three buckets in a row and
the score improved to 25-19.
Several basket exchanges, a
couple of fouls and the
Cavaliers went off on a
nine-point spree that left them
tied with the Nittany Lions,
32-32, on a Frank DeWitt bank
shot with nine seconds to go.

Surprisingly enough, Penn
State foul trouble and the
Cavalier streak at the end of
the half gave the impression
that victory number 19 was
well within coach Bill Gibson's
grasp. Indeed, when Virginia
gained a 43-38 lead to start the
second half, it appeared that
the momentum had changed.

It had not. Jim Dashield hit
two long jumpers, Bob Fittin
had two bank shots and Brown
hit a jumper for Penn State and
the Lions exploded for ten
points in a row. Jim Hobgood
broke the string with a jumper
but State kept putting the ball
in the basket and dashed away
to a 58-46 margin.

At this point, with 8:24 on
the clock, "Hooter" called a
timeout and it did appear
especially effective as the
Cavalier shooting perked up.
Unfortunately, so did State's.
Brown, a 6-4 forward leading
the club in scoring, rebounding
and assists, repeatedly drove
the lane against taller Wahoo
defenders and scored 12 of the
final 26 State points.

Reduced to desperation
fouling tactics, the Cavaliers
saw Brown, Chubb and
Dashield hit eleven charity
shots in a row and despite
drawing to within the four
points, 74-70, with 1:25 left, it
was only fitting that State get
what it deserved and the
Nittany Lions rolled to the
final 12-point margin.

It was no surprise that
Brown led all scorers. He hit
for 25 points, Dashield added
18, and Chubb, whom the
Cavaliers recruited in vain three
years back, chipped in 15.
Barry Parkhill had an off-night
for Virginia but managed 20
points anyway.
