Win 89-88

Cavaliers Subdue WVU

By DOUG DOUGHTY

Before analyzing last night's
game with West Virginia, let's
all thank God that our Wahoos
got away with their life, 89-88,
in overtime at Charleston's
Civic Center.

The Cavaliers, who had
apparently gained the upper
hand when Scott McCandlish
hit a bank shot to make the
score 88-84 with :53 on the
clock in overtime, had to rely
on a free throw by Stevie
Morris with four seconds
remaining to eke out the
clinching margin.

Played as closely as any
game might hope to be, last
night's contest featured II tied
scores and 16' lead changes.
With almost everybody
experiencing a cold night, the
Wahoos had to rely on the hot
hand of the moment to bail
them out of more than a
couple difficult moments, and
only Jim Hobgood played an
exceptional ball game.

The Wahoos led repeatedly
throughout the first half but
could not find the right
combination - Barry Parkhill
did not hit a field goal for
eighteen minutes and Virginia
suffered a type of frontier
justice that netted fifteen fouls
and caused the shocking first
technical of the year on coach
Bill Gibson. Not surprisingly,
the score was tied at the half,
38-38.

West Virginia dominated
much of the second half but
when center Mike Heitz
collected his fourth foul with
9:00 left, the Cavaliers
lengthened a little lead to
eight. Nevertheless, Robinson
directed a rally with his
uncanny play making and timely
shooting that set the stage for
all the later suspense.
