Wrestlers Take 2-1 Mark Into A.I.A. Contest

Harvard, Navy Next In Annapolis On January 15

Meet coordinator Gordon
Burris promises that the
Cavalier wrestlers will tackle
"the best group of wrestlers
ever to be seen at University
Hall" Saturday night when
they meet Athletes in Action.

Officially the Christian
Athletes in Action, the
members of this touring group
share a common devotion to
the Christian life. The team has
scheduled a series of 21
matches against the best
inter-collegiate teams in the
country, including Oklahoma
State. Lockhaven State, Navy
and Maryland. The Athletes
have already bettered the
Middies in a meet earlier in the
season.

Standard wrestling
procedures will be followed for
the meet and it is certain that
Cavalier mentor George
Edwards will put his best
tusslers forward against
probably their toughest
competition to date. Opening
whistle will sound at 7:30 p.m.

Gene Davis, NCAA
Champion in 1966 from
Oklahoma State, serves as
coach for the crew, which hails
predominantly from the
Midwest and southwest. Davis,
who placed fourth in the World
Games at Sofia, Bulgaria, this
summer, is not the only
ex-titlist performing for the
club. Nick Carollo also won a
first place in the NCAA
Championship white a
University of Oregon Webfoot.

The Athlete talent by no
means ends with these two.
Bob Anderson joined Carollo
as a member of the United
States team in the
Pan-American games in Cali,
Columbia this summer. Greg
Hix also took part in
international competition this
summer. Second in the U.S.
Wrestling Federation
Championships, Hix
represented the United States
in several dual meets in
Germany.

Joining these four as
Athlete stalwarts are Larry
Amundson, 1968 NCAA
runnerup; and fourth-place
finishers Reid Lamphere, Jim
Axtell, Pat Holben and Gary
Wallman from other years.

Admission will be granted
to University students with no
charge but high-school
spectators must part with 50
cents to watch this wrestling
extravaganza. The entrance fee
for adults will be one dollar.
