Season's First Win

Swimmers Knock Over VMI, 58-54

By DOUG DOUGHTY

When queried upon the
close call his swimmers
received in a 58-54 victory over
VMI, Wednesday, at Memorial
Gym, Cavalier Coach Ron
Good expressed little concern,
noting "our first-yearmen
scored 51 out of 58 points."

The Cavaliers, rejecting
standard University policy of
"playing them one at a time',
looked towards Saturday's
triangular meet with William
and Mary and West Virginia
while tossing a predominately
first-year line-up at the
Keydets. Seven of these
ambitious Cavalier rookies
bested previous personal
records in assuring victory over
VMI.

Double winners for the
University were Ron Price and
Gordon Netschke. Price swam
his best ever, a surprising
11:3.8, to capture the
1000-yard freestyle and
duplicated his feat later in the
afternoon while swamping the
field in the 500. Netschke's
triumphs in the 100 and
200-yard freestyle events were
just two of eight Cavalier firsts
and only the diving events were
dominated by VMI.

While staging little more
than a Sunday afternoon
float-in at the community
water hole, upperclassmen
Gary Chewning, Allen
Ettenger, Mark Bernardino and
Bill LePard swam their best
ever as a unit while copping the
medley relay in a creditable
4:00 4. Other first-year
standouts included 200-yard
breaststroke victor Mike Hall,
who added a second in the 200
individual medley. Both marks
superseded any personal times
he established back in Newport
News.

Although the meet
constituted little more than
another tough practice session,
many of the first-yearmen will
be counted on if the Cavaliers
are to show well against the
Indians and the Mounties,
Saturday. Netschke and Carvell
are two that seem sure to be
doing some important stroking
in William and Mary's
aquarium.
