Stanley Land Gains Mention
As Wahoo Player Of Week

By JOHN MARKON

For the first time in quite a few
weeks there were enough
outstanding performances in a
Cavalier football contest to make
the selection of the CD's Player of
the Week a difficult decision.
Prevailing in the end was Stanley
Land, defensive end, who did more
than his share in helping subdue
N.C. State, 14-10.

Rushing the passer is Land's
specialty and last Saturday he put
the wood to State quarterback
Bruce Shaw four times. He was also
able to rack up nine unassisted
tackles, leading the team, recover a
fumble and generally wreak havoc
in the Wolfpack backfield.

Not unduly large at 6-3, 211
pounds for a defensive end, Land is
nevertheless an aggressive lineman
who uses a very physical style.
Coach Don Lawrence, as you would
expect, is pleased with the
second-yearman's progress and
credits him with improving game by
game.

Land was the star on a defensive
line that last year won praise as
probably the best ever on a Virginia
first-year team. There was never
much doubt that he would be one
of this year's starters and the
Athletic Department touted him in
pre-season as a future All-ACC
performer.

Last week's star came to the
University by way of tiny
Rockbridge High School on the
slopes of the Blue Ridge where high
school sports are taken seriously.
He won nine letters at Rockbridge,
three in football and two each in
basketball, baseball and track. Land
was a second-team All-State
selection, was voted the dual
honors of Top Offensive and
Defensive Player and was his high
school's Top Athlete.

The Cavalier Press Guide swears
Land's teammates call him
"Bubba" and his style is
reminiscent of that used by the
Baltimore Colt's awesome defensive
end. He's been stationed at the end
slot for quite a while, although
doubling at fullback in high school.
His basketball exploits earned him
All-District honors.

While he was amply enthusiastic
about Land's performance Coach
Lawrence gave the game ball to
defensive captain Andy Selfridge.
Big Sil received the prized pigskin
for his impressive play against State
and for his season-long leadership
of the defensive platoon.

On offense the story was two
scoring passes by Larry Albert that
accounted for all Virginia's points.
Receivers were Bill Davis and Dave
Sullivan, who also gained 15 yards
on a key end-around play.
Half-back Kent Merritt rolled up 97
yards in 21 carries and, despite a
few fumbles, looked more
impressive than the Wolfpack's
Willie Burden, the ACC's other star
sophomore back.
