Cavs Subjugate Indians, 6-1

By RANDY WERT

Cavalier soccer look a big step
forward yesterday afternoon with
an impressive 6-1 shellacking of
William and Mary. Played on the
lower field at University Hall under
the best conditions yet experienced
in home competition, the contest
saw excellent ball control, plentiful
shooting, and a two-goal afternoon
by Sam Crosby.

Virginia outshot the Indians 44
to seven and Coach Jim Stephens
was happy with the scoring
breakout exhibited by his players.
"As you know," explained
Stephens, "this (scoring) has been
our problem all year." William and
Mary opened the scoring with a
quick score early in the game on a
goal by McGovern assisted by
Parker. The remainder of the first
quarter was scoreless.

Ted Knetzger got the "Hoos on
the scoreboard in the first few
minutes of the second period,
tallying on a pass from John
Gordon. Dominating the game
almost entirely, the Virginia
fullbacks kept the ball in Indian
territory and it was not long until
Steve Kennelly drove Jeff Curnie's
pass into the net to make it 2-1 at
the half.

One more Cavalier goal was
added in the third quarter as the
freely substituting Stephens sought
to wear down the Indians who
brought only 14 players from
Williamsburg. The W&M goalie,
making several fine diving and
leaping saves in the meantime,
missed Sam Crosby's shot near the
end of the third stanza. John
Gaughen assisted on the play.

Obviously tiring, the Indians
began to wind down. Jay Connor,
just missing on several other scoring
attempts, took Charlie White's pass
and dropped it into the corner of
the visitor's goal to make it 4-1.
Moments later Crosby notched his
second goal of the afternoon by
drilling the ball hard on a line past
the paralyzed W&M goal-tender.
Connor assisted after nearly getting
the shot himself.

Curme added a goal to his assist
by wrapping up the scoring with a
shot which eluded the Indian's
other goalie near the end of the
fourth period. Fred McGlynn was
credited with the assist.

Coach Stephens admitted that
the team was "a bit slow at the
beginning" but felt that his team's
scoring dearth of late was just "a
matter of breaking the ice." Every
Cavalier player got into the game, a
factor which Mr. Stephens cited as
a major part of the squad's success.

Yesterday's result preserved
Virginia's undefeated in-state status
and prepared the Cavaliers for their
10:00 a.m. Saturday struggle with
Virginia Tech on the same
University Hall field.
