Virginia Cavalier Confronts Army Mules At Halftime Of Last Year's 21-20 Victory

Wahoos Travel To West Point Saturday To Oppose Surprisingly Strong Army Squad

Traveling to West Point's Michie
Stadium, Saturday, the Cavaliers
take on Army in what seemingly is
a very important game for each
team in gaining some measure of
success during the current
campaign.

Surely the Cadets will have fresh
in their minds the 21-20 upset they
suffered at Scott Stadium, last
season. Despite the loss of fourteen
lettermen, Army Coach Tom Cahill
has much experience from which to
draw, including thirteen players
who started last season's finale
against Navy.

Heading the list of returnees for
the Black Knights are defensive
ends Steve Bogosian and John
Roth. Roth, an All-American
nominee, serves as captain for
Army and with Bogosian is rated
one of the best defensive ends in
the East.

Replacements must be found at
the tackle berths on defense but
linebacker Gary Topping and deep
men Matt Wootell, Jim Bryan and
Randy Stein are proven material.

Slated to start as signal caller for
the Cadets, Saturday, is senior
Church Blakely. Blakely, the older
brother of Cavalier linebacker Dan
Blakely, was switched from defense
where he played linebacker last
year, and has supplanted veteran
Dick Atha. Atha, it may be
remembered, came off the bench
and almost resurrected the
impotent Cadets during last year's
contest.

Joining Blakely in the backfield
should be juniors Bob Hines and
Bruce Simpson, the fastest man on
the roster. Ray Ritacco, last year's
leading rusher, may have been lost
in the shuffle as the Black Knight's
new alignment forsakes the fullback
position for a flanker. Ritacco
should see considerable action,
however.

Tight end John Simar moves to
flanker as the only veteran receiver
for Army. Sophomores should man
the other two receiving spots. The
offensive line remains fairly intact
as center Cliff Volz and guard Greg
True head a host of returnees,
averaging a substantial 228 pounds
per man.

The Cadets bring a 2-3 mark
into the contest, as measured
against the University's 1-5 record.
All three losses came to ranked
teams, as Standford, Penn State and
Air Force have inflicted stinging
defeats upon Army. On the other
hand, the Cadets, yet to be favored
this year, have claimed upset wins
over Georgia Tech, 16-13, and
Missouri, 22-6.
