Albert Cited As Top Performer

BY TOM BELL

Many individuals stand out for
their fine performances against
Vanderbilt Saturday. Bill Davis
broke a receiving record. The
offensive line had its best day of
the season, and the defense rose up
to stop the Commodores many
times. But the individual who
stands out above the rest is the
smallest man in the Cavalier starting
lineup: quarterback Larry Albert.

Albert started his first game of
the season Saturday, and, according
to Head Coach Don Lawrence had
an "exceptionally fine day at
quarterback." He scored twice on
quarterback sneaks, and fired to
split end Bill Davis for a third score,
the one that Brought the Cavaliers
from behind with less than two
minutes remaining.

The 5-10, 180-pound signal
caller from Camp Hill, Pa.,
completed 14 of 23 tosses for 217
yards, more than the total Cavalier
passing yardage in the first three
games. In addition, he ran the ball
21 times for 51 yards to be the
second leading rusher for the
Wahoos.

"At 5-10, he runs the football

team as if he were a 6 foot, 5 inch
giant," said offensive coordinator
Sil Cornachione in summing up
Albert's performance. "He did a fine

job in sticking to the game plan,
and took advantage of the
opportunities presented to him by
the defense."

On the way to the first Wahoo
touchdown. Albert ran for 35 yards
and threw for 35 more on the
72-yard drive, although one of his
runs, a 19-yarder, was all but wiped
out by a clipping penalty.

When the Cavaliers were down
15-14 in the last period, Albert
engineered another drive, this time
running for 15 yards and passing
for 52. Then, on the final drive of
the day, he accounted for eight
yards on the ground and 40 in the
air, and drove the team 66 yards in
only 32 seconds for the winning
TD.

The outstanding day makes
Albert the team's leading passer
for the season with 21 completions
in 40 tries for 281 yards and a 525
completion percentage. He is also
the second leading rusher with 106
yards on 33 carries for a 3.1 yard
average, and the leading scorer with
12 points. He almost had more
points when a two-point conversion
try fell just short Saturday.

Albert was the Cavalier starter
at the beginning of last season until
a shoulder separation knocked him
out in the fourth game of the
season against Wake Forest. His top
performance before Vanderbilt was
in last season's 7-0 opening win
against VPI.

Although he saw only limited
action in the first three Cavalier
games this season, Albert impressed
the coaching staff with the way
he moved the ball against Duke,
and was given a chance to start
against Vanderbilt. Mr. Lawrence
indicated after the game that Albert
will continue as a starter as long as
he can move the football.

A fourth-yearman, Albert is
only a junior in eligibility as he was
redshirted his second-year. A
student in the College he was voted
into the 1970 volume of
Outstanding College Athletes in
America.
