Wahoos To Regroup For Vandy

By RANDY WERT

Several shakeups on the
starting units headline the final
pre-game preparations as the
Cavaliers hone down the rough
edges before Vanderbilt's
Commodores enter Scott
Stadium.

Virginia's coaching staff has
announced that although Harrison
Davis will start the ballgame at
quarterback, third year reserve
Larry Albert will be given ample
opportunity to move the ballclub
against Vandy. Starting quarterback
at the beginning of last season,
Albert suffered a shoulder injury
which disabled him, with Bill Troup
assuming the first team job. With
turn of events, Troup is gone, and
his successor, Davis now finds his
job is jeopardy to the 5' 10",
180-pound Albert.

In another offensive shift,
sophomore Mike McGugan has been
elevated to the first unit at flanker
in front of Brian Kitchen. A 6-3,
175-pounder, McGugan heads all
Wahoo receivers with 67 yards on
only five catches for a 13.4 yard
average. Injured Steve Shawley will
not start and Greg Godfrey will
play at guard.

Another sophomore, Steve a,
will start the Vanderbilt game at
left safety in place of Robbie
Gustafson with Bob McGrail
returning to give the secondary a
two senior, two sophomore look.
Sroba, 5′9″, 189 pounds, will
become a starter in his second
varsity sport, already proving
himself one of the top hitters of the
Cavalier baseball team.

Indication are that the other
three-quarter of last year's
backfield will be available for duty
Saturday with their injuries being
wither will be available for duty
Saturday with their injuries being
either healed or endurable. Flanker
Dave Sullivan, second among ACC
terminals last year, Gary Helman,
co-captain, and three year starter,
and Jim Lacey, also in his third
year as 2 front line halfback, will all
be suited up and ready to see action
for offensive coordinator Sil
Cornachione. Helman and Lacey
gained over 1,600 yards on the
ground last season and their
absence has been sorely missed with
the punishment taken in recent
games by their remainder of the
backfield corps.

Bob Bressan will again be at
defensive left tackle after sitting out
the Duke game due to eligibility
regulations.

Meanwhile, Vandy Coach Bill
Pace enters the Charlottesville
confrontation with guarded
optimism saying, "They are a very
dangerous team with strong
potential. It will take an all out
effort to beat them, particularly in
their own backyard." Halfback
Dennis Mazar, holding a 6.1 yards
per carry average, is a doubtful
starter, but All-SEC guard
candidate Sandy Haury will return
from his ankle injury against
Louisville.

Vandy's main offensive
formation is the vogue Wishbone T
which has been adopted by many
teams from Wake Forest to
Marshall University after its great
success at Texas. Field General of
the Vanderbilt wishbone is Steve
Burger, a good runner and adequate
passer who is highly rated by the
Cavalier coach as a veer
quarterback. Burger leads the
Commodores in rushing yardage
after three games with halfbacks
Jamie O'Rourke and Mazur close
behind in characteristically
balanced wishbone fashion. W
the accent on running, no Vandy
receiver has more than five
receptions and 53 yards
