Lacrosse Team Wins, 13—4

Eldredge Leads As Cavaliers Drub Generals

Pete Eldredge fired in seven
goals and had two assists on the
wet, muddy turf at University Hall
Field yesterday to lead the Cavalier
lacrosse team to its ninth win of the
season, a 13-4 decision over
Washington and Lee.

The Generals looked as though
they would make it a real contest in
the early going, but faded after the
opening quarter, as Eldredge, who
had two assists in addition to his
goals, led a Cavalier surge that left
outmanned W&L trolling in the
mud.

Intermittent rain throughout the
first half created a sloppy field for
the game, which, according to
Cavalier coach Glenn Thiel, may
have hurt the Generals.

Steve Nauss had two goals and
an assist. Jay Connor had a goal and
three assists, and Rick Beach had
two goals to back up Eldredge.
Goalie Al Hirsh had 14 saves.

Washington and Lee, backed by
a screaming horde of supporters
which grew noticeably quieter as
the game went on, gave the
Cavaliers a scare in the first quarter,
as they took a 3-2 lead in the
period's end. The Generals
controlled five of the six faceoffs in
the quarter, and turned two of
them into quick goals. Their other
score came on an extra-man
situation. Nauss and Eldredge got
their first scores to keep the
Cavaliers close.

Eldredge started to assert
himself in the second quarter as he
threw in three goals to put the
Cavaliers firmly in command. Ricky
Beach chipped in his first near the
end of the half, to give Virginia a
6-3 halftime lead.

The Cavaliers ran away with the
game in the second half, stretching
the lead to 12-3 before the Generals
could get back on the scoreboard.
Eldredge had three goals and an
assist to lead the way, backed by
goals from Beach, Connor, Nauss,
and Jim Ulman.

"We could go one-on-one
better," was Mr. Theil's analysis
after the game. He credited W&L
with having a good team, but said
"we wore them down in the
midfield."

Eldredge's seven goals is one
short of the all-time Cavalier record
of eight, set in 1958, and ties Tom
Duquette's seven against Johns
Hopkins last year for second place.
Mr. Thiel praised Eldredge, saying
"He's the greatest one-on-one
player I've ever seen."

With the win, the Cavaliers
cleared the next-to-last hurdle in
their try for an undefeated season.
The final game before the NCAA
playoffs is Saturday night at 8:30
against Hofstra, in the first game
they have ever played both under
the lights and on Astroturf.
