Stickmen Host Generals Today

By Tom Bell
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

The Cavalier lacrosse team,
which yesterday received its official
NCAA tournament bid, faces
another tough contest this
afternoon at 3:30 when
eighth-ranked Washington and Lee
comes to University Hall Field for
the final home game of the season.

Ranked number one in the
nation, the Cavaliers received a bid
along with Army, Navy, Brown and
Cornell, for the eight-team
tournament which begins next
week.

Two tough games remain for
Virginia, however, before the
tourney begins, both with teams
who are fighting to get one of the
remaining three bids.

Washington and Lee, an easy
victim for the past two years, has
come up with an excellent crop of
freshmen and should give the
Cavaliers a real fight. They have lost
only one game, that being to Navy
by a 10-8 score after the Generals
led at the half.

Excitement is high in Lexington
as the Minks think they finally have
the team that can top the Cavaliers.
According to a spokesman at W&L,
200 to 300 students will cross the
mountain for the game, some of
them in chartered buses, and most
of the classes this afternoon have
been cancelled in order to allow
everyone a chance to come.

The Generals have what is
probably one of the finest midfields
in the nation, and more than half of
the first two units are made up of
freshmen.

Attackman Sam Engelhart is the
leading scorer, with 35 goals in 11
games.

The Cavaliers have not lost to
the Generals since 1958, and have
an overwhelming 25-9 lead in the
series between the two teams. Last
year Virginia scored a 19-3 victory
in Lexington over a team that was
8-3 on the year. The year before
the score was 23-2.

But old records can be thrown
out for the game today, because
there will be a number of new faces
in the W&L lineup, the result of a
recruiting program by head coach
Dick Slaza and then-Athletic
Director Eugene Corrigan, who has
since come to the University.

Freshman Skip Lichtfuss, along
with Jim McCane and Chip
Tompkins make up the first
midfield unit for the Generals,
while the second unit consists of
Ted Bauer, and John Lalley, and
veteran Whit Morrill.

Saturday's miracle win over
Maryland left the Cavaliers in good
shape for the next step in their try
for the first undefeated regular
season in Virginia lacrosse history.
The final step, should the team
get past the Generals, will come
Saturday when they travel to
Long Island to face Hofstra. They
are now 7-0 against
collegiate competition.

Jay Connor's four goals and an
assist against the Terps increased his
lead over second-leading scorer
Tom Duquette, who had two goals
in the game, Connor now has 44
points with 22 goals and an equal
number of assists, while Duquette
leads the team in goals with 23 and
has 12 assists for 35 points.

Pete Eldredge chipped in a goal
Saturday to increase his points to 25
(19 goals and six assists), four
points ahead of Rick Beach with 21
(18 and three). Doug Cooper's
assist upped his point total to 18.
