Big Third Period

Malletmen Rip Cornell

Loyal Virginia polo fans, who
braved threatening skies to go to
last Sunday's game, were rewarded
with a burst of sunshine and a 14-8
Cavalier victory over Cornell
University.

The first period got off to a fast
start with Jake Kenworthy, John
Denegre and team captain Dave
Banks riding for Virginia against
Cornell's Jack Kittell, captain Al
Olson and Bill Leslie. In the first
half of the period Banks scored
twice, to be countered later on by
two goals by Olson.

Mark Pirrung and Reid Graham
joined Banks in the second period
which was dominated by the Big
Red's four goals, one by Kittel, two
by Olson and one by Leslie. Banks
scored once, During this period,
Pirrung's mount, Stickleback, kept
up its habit of dumping at least one
rider per game.

Virginia's attack finally ignited
and the third period saw the
Cavaliers persistently on the
offensive, supported as always by
Banks' sailing deadeye backshots
and Graham's cannonball forehand
shots. Pirrung, Graham and Banks
each scored twice, and Cornell's
Kittel netted a tally.

Olson Injured

In the final period of the game
there occurred one of those
unfortunate hazards of the sport.
Not long after firing in a goal, the
Big Red's Olson was hit in the jaw
by the tossing head of his horse,
Stickleback, and had a front tooth
knocked out.

The referee did not know that
Olson was injured and consequently
the game continued. In order to
stop play as quickly as possible,
Olson leaped from his horse and
dropped to the ground to "play
dead". The game was stopped
immediately and, after consolation,
Olson retired from the game and
was replaced by Virginia defector
Kenworthy.

Steele Stars

When play resumed, Roger
Steele brilliantly clinched the
Virginia victory by scoring three
times and making two pony goals.

This Sunday, May 9, Virginia
will play its toughest opponent of
the season, Intercollegiate
champion Yale. This is always the
fastest and most exciting game of
a season. Game time is 2:30 at the
Farmington Hunt Club, on Garth
Road. The game will be proceeded
by a driving show at 1:00, featuring
about ten horse and carriage rigs.
