With the publication of the Landlord-Tenant
Handbook, the first in a series of five legal aid
handbooks, the Student Aid and Lawyer
Referral Service of Madison Hall has been busy
responding to requests of students and other
Charlottesville tenants who also are confronted
with learning problems.

The booklet, authored by Jack Young, Fred
Tulley, and George Trowbridge, is a
straightforward attempt to alert tenants to the
problems of renting in Charlottesville. The most
unique features of the booklet are the sections
on "writing one's own lease" and the
"Landlord-Tenant's responsibilities."

In support of these booklets Madison Hall
Student Aid has been revitalized to handle all
aspects of landlord and tenant problems, in
addition to other areas of legal and
administrative difficulty. The Legal Aid Office,
which is open from 7-9 p.m., Monday through
Thursday, handles everything from lease
problems and retained deposits to acquiring
adequate heat for tenants. As the authors have
stated the Office is trying to play a part in
protecting the individual tenant in a legal and
market situation which favors the landlord.

The Office of Student Aid at Madison Hall is
now in the process of researching such areas of
the law as automobile accidents and insurance,
debtor and creditor rights, student rights and
administrative advocacy.

The Student Aid Office hopes by the Fall of
1971 to offer students a comprehensive service
of legal aid and administrative assistance for all
student problems. Student Aid will have in full
operation by Fall a service of Lawyer Referral
which will refer students unfamiliar with
attorneys in Charlottesville to competent
lawyers when professional legal services are
needed.
