Hall Stars At Plate

Beale Homerun Wins Game

Virginia catcher Sammy Beae is
a rather unlikely ballplayer.
Possessed of below average height
and above average weight he looks
rather like, say, a truck driver.
Yesterday, however, it was
truck driver Beale's eighth-inning
homerun that was the difference in
the Cavs' 5-4 win over North
Carolina at Lambeth Field.

Virginia had other standouts, of
course. Second baseman Billy Hall
went four-for-four including a
homer, and Rick Spigone and Mike
Judkins pitched fine, courageous
ballgames, but Beale's shot, a hit
that Tar Heel centerfielder Ron
Cox dove over the hurricane fence
to try to catch, was without
question the highlight.

North Carolina, a solid team
now fallen on hard times, provided
a highlight of its own in the first
when Bobby Elliott led off the
contest with a four-bagger to left.
Hall matched that blast in the
bottom half of the inning and the
tight game began.

Carolina scored twice in the
fourth, stringing together two hits,
a walk and two Virginia throwing
errors to take a 3-1 lead. The Cavs
came back to tie in the bottom of
the frame, using doubles by Hall
and Mike Cubbage, and a
bases-loaded Carolina error to knot
the score.

Spigone was relieved by Judkins
in the UNC eighth, when Carolina
scored their last run. He departed
with two on, and Judkins
subsequently issued walks to Larry
Kiser and Doug Lanham to force
the run home.

Hall led off the Virginia eighth
with a single but was forced by
Cubbage. Steve Sroba flied to left
but then Beale shocked and thrilled
the small crowd, not mentioning
Carolina starter and loser Dave
Bullard who was most likely
shocked but hardly thrilled, by
driving his homer over Lambeth
Field's most distant boundary.

Winner Judkins is now 4-0 and
Virginia's next game is at home
against Tech tomorrow afternoon
at 2:30.
